Last year my husband's aunt died. She was on dialysis and was told she could discontinue treatments and die in a couple weeks or continue and die in a couple months. She chose to stop treatments and died a week later. I'm sure if she had gotten a transplant she would still be alive.

Get off of that protein heavy diet and chances are you'll never need dialysis for the rest of your life. There is a body of research showing that people eating way more protein than their body needs are at the highest risk of getting kidney failure, which makes sense because all the excess protein has to be broken down into sugar and urea and the kidney has to clear all that urea from the blood. If you keep overworking your kidney like that, it's no wonder that it'll fail by the age of 60. Eat enough protein and no more, period

Nixon’s Medicare reform ensured Medicare would pay for dialysis, not that the government would pay for dialysis “for anyone who needs it.” Only those eligible for Medicare will have 80% of their dialysis paid for by Medicare; it is NOT universal healthcare for all kidney patients. This is an issue I always have with John Oliver—his intention is good, but he grossly oversimplifies things with inaccurate or incomplete information. It helps him make a decent joke tagline, but it’s not helpful for actually informing people or giving an accurate picture of what’s actually going on. And as much as he wants to demonize Davita and Fresenius, they are the reason we don’t have death panels to decide who gets to dialyze today. Yes, they make a profit, but competition in the market to deliver care has expanded both access to care and quality of care for renal patients. I place more fault on Medicare and the government for our current system which lags behind the rest of the world. These corporations have built their business to work within the rules Medicare sets forth; because Medicare has not adjusted to changes in technology and best practices, can you really fault a corporation for following suit?

This scam is as old as time. When the government pays private enterprise for a good or service, private enterprise jacks up the price and overcharges or they engage in wasteful fraudulent practices in order to bill the government. They are able to get away with this because the government offices paying the bill don't give a damn how much things cost and there are no questions asked......they just pay whatever is billed. You can't get away with stuff like that when people have to reach into their own pocket and pay. Get this......the entire student loan monstrosity is another example of this practice. Universities jack up the price of tuition because any idiot fresh out of high school is able to borrow almost unlimited amounts of money with the government as a cosigner. Universities are ripping off the tax payers and the government is helping them. Unfortunately, most people are not able to see this reality.

kidney transplants do not necessarily provide significantly longer life expectancy and can actually be worse than dialysis depending on severity. that is a decision that should be made with the physician and the patient and no one else. kidney transplants suffer from rejection, not to mention that the anti-rejection medications make you susceptible to life threatening infections. kidneys don't last forever, last I saw was they last 10-15 years (although that may have increased) at which time you will have to go back on dialysis and get another transplant, not to mention that transplants pose the risk of major abdominal surgery, and all the negative effects associated with that (stroke, PE, MI, physician error) and finding a donor is not very easy, if you don't have a family member willing to donate, you might wait years if you ever get to the top of the list at all. I'm not a fan of the advice from these companies, but I feel you're leaving out that there are significant risks to both options, and what you're advocating is basically the removal of one of the options, which means you'd have to stay in the hospital until a kidney was found, assuming the resources in your area even allowed that to happen.

what you're conveniently leaving out is that if they did go to trial, left it in the hands of the jury, and the jury found against them, they would be shut out of medicare (and we all know what juries tend to thing of large corporate entities). getting shut out of medicare means the company cannot operate, since dialysis in this country is completely covered by medicare due to the bill from Nixon you mentioned earlier, meaning 100% of their income is through medicare. the facilities would shut down, and millions of people would lose access to dialysis, and just like that clip you showed earlier, those people are dead now.

so, a trained and certified dialysis technician comes over and says that they've pulled off enough fluid for that day, and some lady getting the procedure wonders if she's getting her full treatment, and you're going to assume the lady is right?

comparing our dialysis care to other countries isn't really fair given that we have more access to more dangerous forms of dialysis that are used for treatment where normal dialysis wouldn't work, as well has having significantly higher rates of diabetes, atherosclerosis, and drug abuse than other countries, all of that to say we have a lot more people, and a lot more high risk people on dialysis.

My name is Erik. I'm 40 with a daughter who is my world. Unfortunately, I was born with polycystic kidney disease, which runs in my family. At the age of 27 my kidneys failed, but I was fortunate to get a kidney transplant right away. After roughly 10 years, the transplanted kidney failed (the antibody match was not a good one and my immune system rejected it). Since April 11, 2016 (my birthday), I have been on dialysis. I'm listed at both Vanderbilt Kidney Transplant and The University of Kentucky Kidney Transplant, and for over 3 years now no possible donor living or cadaver has come through. I just want to get back to a normal life, chasing my dream of going to law school, playing with my daughter and being a part of her life more often, and just having a day where I feel good. I even just found out today that because of my extended time on dialysis my chance of dying, leaving my daughter behind, has increased to roughly 50%. Moreover, my vascular system is beginning to calcify (become bone), because of my extended time on dialysis, further increasing my risk of death. Please help. All the information to become a living donor is found in the updates below. Also, recently I talked to my transplant social worker and I will have to come up with 20% of a $250,000 transplant surgery and hospital stay. Medicare will only cover 80% of the cost, and I am unable to get secondary insurance because of my pre-existing kidney disease and failure. Anything will help to offset this cost. Fortunately, unless I get a call soon, I have time to get these funds together and prepare. If I get anything to put toward this future debt, I'd be grateful. Thank you all!

Those people would've said: "Fuck yes I want a transplant." They can always go back to that community if it's that important to them, and being able to live longer means you can enjoy that community longer.

tldr; "I don't want to leave." sounds like something a patient would say if they were not told that getting a transplant increases their survival.

You should do a segment on organ donation, particularly considering there are so many BS "justifications" people use for why they don't want to donate or don't want their loved one's organs donated!
