Linus, I didn't catch the part where you use your thermal glue and spreader on the cpus, unless i missed that part.

Fond memories indeed! I had a pair of 8800GTX's, 9800GTX's, GTX280's, 480's back when I used to build and OC. Even remember the awesome moment when overclocking a Q6600 to 3Ghz :-D My favourite chip from the pre i7 era was definateley the QX9650!

lol I'm still running my AMD Phenom II X4 940 BE with 8GB DDR2 on a GIgabyte ma770 all from 2008/2009 with a GTX 1050ti and SSDs. Still on the original power supply too. Used every day. It's my only rig besides the laptop. But the only game I play the last few years is Cities:Skylines. The only problem i've ever had was boot issues until I replaced the mobo battery.

If you want to close out a task after it crashes best way is to Windows+Tab and drag the crashed item onto another desktop "New Desktop" letting you open task manager.

love the video, but i would have prefered to see games in 1080p since that is what i am using, dunno what the majority uses though. For me 4k is no useful performance reference.

I think this is not really representative of the "how bad enthusiast hardware was 10 years ago". From one side there were far worse boards, from other hand by the time of release D5400XS was kind of already obsolete. 2009 was literally end of life for 771 socket and we have both 1366 and 1156 coming into play in 2009 and 2010 respectively. In short this dual-CPU board with DDR2 and 771 is last kick for EOD product which got totally obsolete 1 year after release. Take for example my board (Asus Maximus III Extreme) which is now 9 years old yet totally modern board without any quirks, DDR3 up-to 2200mhz, USB3.0 out of the box, SATA3.0, 5x16 PCI-E 2.0, 4-way Crossfire/SLI and 1156 CPUs are relatively modern. It doesn't even need 2CPUs, special ram etc. Further i7 880/Xeon X3480 blows x9775 away... ok maybe not 2x x9775, but with DDR3 memory and more straightforward set-up real life performance is probably even better. Maybe only sign of the age is that it only takes max 16GB ram in 4 slots... recently started bidding on 32GB kits and realised my MB won't even take 32GB, but I was living just fine with 8GB until now, so 16GB will last me perhaps another 5 years. Even better example would be Asus Rampage II or III Extreme with 1366 socket (actually any premium X58 board) - much wider range of CPU available, especially Xeons and even more features from 10 years old board.

In summary... anyone who bought D5400XS in 2009 made terrible mistake, because within month S1366 was launched, DDR3 ram became mainstream and whatever was possible with S771 was blown away for 1/5th of the price in S1366 and soon after for even less on S1156.

I’m amazed that I spent about the same $$ in 2004 to build a computer as I did last month. Computers loose value by the time you build it, but it’s all for fun and I love it so😍

Thanks for the hilarious vid. Sadly, I was drawn in because I'm still using something pretty similar to what you set up. I'm still using a Mid 2010 Mac Pro as my main PC. I originally paid about $3K, and have upgraded over the years with a Radeon RX580 + dual 4K displays, dual Xeon 6 core CPUs, an NVMe SSD in a PCIe slot, and USB3.1 in another. Memory can go to 128G, but I've never needed more than 32. It's just shy of miraculous, but Apple provided a firmware update last year to allow booting from NVMe. Before this PC I used to buy a new PC or Mac every 2 years or so, and I have to say it was really worth it to invest in this rig and enjoy it for what's going on 10 years!

Also Maybe so how well it could play in 1080p considering most people still use that setting. I it would be interesting to watch how you would decide to water cool both cpu's as well.

Looks like the fails are from the SATA SSD, and the wins are from the Titan X.

It's not bad for it's age, but I put together a Core 2 Extreme 9650 for about £50-80 with 8GB DDR2 RAM a couple of years ago. It has an Nvidia 1060 in it at the moment (obviously more expensive, but not especially for this build), and it's fine. It couldn't stream GTA V properly for more than a short session. I guess there's a bottleneck accessing the SATA SSD.
