It's not even about "the fans" it's about coherence to the archetypes and cannon that make the universe feel legitamite.

In short, it's incredibly shitty story telling to push poorly thought out and contradictory religiouseque ideologies.

Star Wars is Star Wars, it's already been defined, if you change that, it doesn't matter what you call it, it's no longer Star Wars.

"A rose by any other name..."

Words don't define what something is, something is and we use words to describe and categorize what is.

That's the problem. These new films aren't Star Wars. The essence of Star Wars isn't magic and glowing swords, it's stories in the coherent universe if Star Wars. Break that coherence, break the laws of the "physics" or the "reality" in the Star Wars universe, it's not the Star Wars universe. It's not Star Wars.

Tell a decent story in coherence with Star Wars, and it might not break the box office, but it won't be fraud against Star Wars consumers, it might just be a wookie christmas. It won't betray the consumers. It won't be a lie calling a non-starwars film Star Wars.

Comparing it to religion shows how sickly the human culture has become. I grew up with the originals and all that. The outrage and effort people put into this becomes escapism. Instead of stewarding our real world they make sure b.s. space story is intact for future generations instead of our actual world.

Has Disney ever ordered the assasination of anyone? Has Disney ever stole anything? Has Disney made something illegal? No. You have to remember: Disney is the same company that brings happiness to millions of families worldwide. ESPECIALLY children. And people NEEDS happiness. Besides, Disney executives NEED money to mantain themselves, feed their families, have a healthy live and give their children good education. And they do it in a legal, unharmful and honest way.

I'm afraid that too much damage has been made to the franchise. Maybe if Episode IX boycott would be successful enough, and - what I doubt - Disney would openly confirm that Episodes VIII-IX were a huge mistake and they are going to reboot them... there would be a slight chance of SW fans to come back. But in current world it's more possible that all will be lost, with Disney explaining that franchise has been murdered by stupid bunch of fanboys.

Harrison had more career phases, so I can see why he might want to kill Han, but Luke Skywalker is the height of Hamill's career, and bankers are soiling the enterprise, but, shoot, Lucas hurt the franchise, right out of the gate, when Obi Wan lied to Luke about his Father. A bad story gamble, in My opinion.
Another problem was killing Peter Cushing (Grand Moff Tarkin) on the Death Star, thus eliminating a second movie veteran from the franchise, along with Sir Alec, who left, for the most part, after the saber fight with Vader.
I think they could have stopped at "Empire," but, after "Howard The Duck," perhaps Lucas had money problems.

                                                                                      1. People don't like to be disrespected.

I'm going to blaspheme here and say I didn't enjoy the original star wars very much.
That said I find the new Disney versions way worse, one thing I value from any movie creating a franchise is internal logic. As in, established universe rules are strictly followed. An example of where this is broken (There are many many many throughout TLJ) is where the ship ramps the fleet at light speed. This would have changed warfare drastically, and now renders all previous space battles illogical, laser weapons useless and so on. Another example is how the force is used in strange ways that totally breaks all previous canon.

Another thing you absolutely need to do is tell a good story with interesting characters. I don't have any personal stake in any starwars character, so luke getting old and jaded could have worked for me, but it didn't, why? Because the movie doesn't give us a believable transition from old hopeful luke to new jaded old luke. With a great character arc set up where luke slowly loses hope, with believable motivations, it could totally have worked, at least for me.

For add further, the main character can't be a mary sue, it takes away all tension from the plot, unless handled extremely well. There are examples of where sue character work, but the writing needs to keep them away from the main threats in believable ways for the writing to work.

The last thing I'll add is the viewablility of the stories scope, how big is the first order exactly? What planets do they hold? And what about the resistance? A great example from a movie is Lord of the rings, the battle for helms deep. You have clear objectives, the wall, the gate, the outer courtyard, the inner courtyard and finally the last hideout in the mountains. At any point in that battle you can pretty much tell how it's going, the swings all come from story beats, the gunpowder being stacked under the wall without anyone noticing, the runner igniting it because of legolas not hitting that fatal arrow properly. TLJ completely lacks any of this, you have no idea how the scales of the battle are turning and twisting, and it appears the director doesn't either, need a threat? Great 100 star destroyers just arrived! Ooops, that accidentally wrote you into a corner? Well the resistance has a big base on another planet suddenly, we can flee there!

                                                                                            w0g  3 weeks back

This metaphor is seriously flawed. The Catholic Church had a long period of legitimacy. Disney has never produced a Star Wars product that was regarded as legitimate. Perhaps a better analogy would be a political coup driven by foreign interests, where the new government is seen as illegitimate at its inception. Similarly the idea that Hollywood would stop hiring risk taking visionary writers and directors because of the fan back lash and would start hiring marketing hacks makes no sense. The complaint is that the films are being driven by corporate political agendas instead of by artistic story telling.

He just looks like he's being physically, emotionally and mentally abused by Disney, dudes hands are literally shaking when he face palms at 1:33 . It's just sad.
