Prius is very reliable, and I have bought 3 gen 2s for me and family. I bought my 2005 Prius with 286000 miles on it for $3K in 2016, and used it for Uber/Lyft. Now it has over 350000 miles, and is still very reliable. I get over 40 MPG on average on the original battery, and so far I have only spent $1200 in repairs : inverter coolant pump, and ABC brake module. Plus a set of tires and regular oil changes. It drives like a champ, and I recommend buying a used Prius as long you check the health of battery.

I have a Toyota Camry 2007 Hybrid. The gas pedal can sometimes randomly become unresponsive while driving. The car still has power and everything else works, but it will not accelerate and slowly glide to an eventual halt as if it were on neutral. No unusual sound or anything when I press on the pedal, just zero acceleration. If I pull over and restart the car, everything becomes normal again. This happens a few times a day. Any idea what it could be? The dashboard is showing check vsc and hybrid system. I also checked the obd but the only codes that showed were regarding battery replacement.

      Thanks!

2 weeks ago I got a use 2007 Prius with 100543 miles, still in good conditions, a few stains on the carpet but I cleaned really good, it looks great and runs excellent, I only paid $1.00 dollar yes only $1.00 dollar, I filled the gas tank with 22 dollars, big difference from my trucks f350s I put $98 every 3 days. Am very happy with my Prius.

Here in the UK, the Prius has not been a big seller and, yes, some taxi-drivers use older ones.
But they look ugly, and are expensive.
However, Toyota offer hybrid versions of just about all their models - which are better looking than the Prius - and the hybrid systems are all based on that developed on the Prius , over the years.

I'm looking at a 2005 Toyota Prius which yes it's old, however it has low mileage (61k). Even with that low mileage, should I stay away?

If you plan on driving it for the long term you can expect to pay $3000 to $5000 dollars to replace the battery followed by similar amounts to replace the generator. All the money saved on fuel will be spent on long term maintenance. Expect to shell out the big bucks between years 5 through 10. If you must have this model and want to avoid a possibly endless money pit, lease it for the short term or avoid becoming the second or third owner.

If you buy a Third gen Prius, buy one that's 2011-2012 (super duper launch speed, 2010's could launch as well, but they burned oil) After 2012 Toyota added a 1.5 second delay on speeding up from a complete stop to full power, they also programmed the electric motor to slowly help you get going, instead of using full torque/power to get you going up to speed. But 2010-2012 were beasts for fast launches and they're so much fun to drive, get an old beater and drive it like you stole it, you will love it!

I was looking into a 2013 Prius C here in Canada.
After hearing about a battery cost or Gen. cost I think I'll stick to a used Corolla (2005-2010) gas / standard.
Holy smokes the Hybrids are insanely expensive to repair!!! the price you'll save in gas isn't worth it.

Paid 100 for a 2003 prius dealer said 1000s. Figured battery was screwed, it wasn't. Needed a new 12v, used a lawn mower battery instead of the 250 dollar toyota battery. So for total of 130 I got a running Prius with 260000 miles. I think shes got another 140000 in her at least.

Her mechanic scared her out of it. Told her it was going to be $3900 to fix it. Bought a brand new Hybrid Traction battery at Pep Boys for $1300. Electric motor has 400nm torque from 0 rpm ,the atkinson cycle engine low noise and (bhp) power in higher rpms. High fuel consumption comes from low torque of peterol engines in general ,this is where electricity helps ,the start stop and regenerative breaking is just bonus. The Electric motor is still more reliable than any automatic gearbox and much less mechanical issues than diesels. don't get the negativity

Sorry Scotty. You’re way wrong on this one. My Mercedes GLS can now sit back and live only for the weekends.

It's about the environment. BUT it does work out cheaper on tax and fuel so the cost your saving goes towards your maintenance costs. If you look after your car it is centrale to run and lasts longer, same goes regardless of drive train /fuel system.

I see a lot of people saying your opinion is only based off a first gen prius, but what about newer toyota hybrids?

The only thing you might need every 2-4 years is refurbished battery for $300-600 depending on where you live. Usually nothing else breaks down. The only trick is that they need to be driven for the hybrid battery to last a long time. If you're gonna drive it once a week the prius isnt for you but otherwise it'll be great investment!
