Jay, I think the idea of an upset mass of people in Gotham was hinted at a few times in the beginning (Garbage union protests, mass dissent against the mayor etc). The Killing on the subway was the incident that inspired the movement to take on a clown identity even though the movement had seemingly already existed.

People say that his laughter at the comedy club was completely random but i saw it as his lack of timing. He seemed to be hyper focused and somewhat in tune with the punch lines just slower than a healthy minded person.

why would they establish the story line any more as far as joker knows about it because we are seeing the story unfold from his perspective and the joker doesn't fully understand why there are riots so neither should we

Jay, I can't and won't make this any simpler for you. You failed at life. You failed. When one thinks of what man is capable of, pushing himself to the limits physically, mentally and emotionally to achieve heights of success never before mentioned, your name will not be whispered in the same, reverent fashion that others have. Nobody will remember Jay Bauman. You aren't even a header or a footer in the career of someone else. You are nobody. Nothing. Nada. Zilch. In short, you are an enormous failure. Jay, being that you're about 30 years old and your brain has probably hard-wired itself to accept such failures by now and write off such criticism by being "flippant", really suggests that you've passed beyond the proverbial breaking-point. There's no turning back. This is your career, this is what defines you and this is what you'll defend to the end. The abhorrent failure that is Red Letter Media, Jay Bauman, that is your legacy. Maybe I'm over-reaching, however. Who knows? People CAN change. Maybe you'll read this, Jay, and think long and hard about what a wasteful life you've led. Maybe you'll think, "wow. It's incredible just how abysmal and pathetic I really AM!" Maybe you'll lift some weights in the morning. Maybe you'll take a self-help class. Maybe in a couple of years, Jay, you'll have learned from this failure. I doubt it, though. I genuinely doubt it.

Seems like Jay didn't actually watch the movie and based all of his criticism off of cliff notes or something. I've never seen him miss out on so many key points. re-watch the movie fellas.

It’s pointless. I can tell that Jay wanted to dislike this movie from the get go. He saw the hype, it didn’t resonate with him, and he had to rationalise any disdain.

Is it fair to think that Arthur already had the Joker personality. Society supressed it with drugs and healthcare / therepy, with his alter ego always present behind the scenes, uncontrollably reminding us it's there through his condition. The moment the drugs and help stop it starts becoming more prominent. The last scene of him laughing at Wayne's murder finally is unleashed. Gotham made him. (Maybe. Anyhoo, this film has many layers, hope they don't make a sequel because they will have to settle for one.)

RLM. Sometimes very funny, but a lot of the time they become the people they mock, hurling oit insults or blatant lies. Loud = funny.

Honestly i think they think they're waaaay bigger than they are. Huge egos, acting so smug or like they're above other youtube channels despite their sub count growing at a crawling pace. And dont even get me started on the overrated Plinkett reviews.

Half in the Bag in just their initial reaction after one viewing. They miss shit all the time in these reviews. So don't act so offended because Jay missed a few details.

This film has a lot of themes, some of which you guys touched upon like mental illness and classism, but I think you missed out the biggest which is the warning of victimhood and of the dangers of victimising someone with nothing to lose and then acting like you had nothing to do with it. It's the pathology of (edgy maymay incoming) the society we live in, not too dissimilar to this 'incel' thing that's been going around lately: we pathologise 'slut shaming' and then in the same breath make fun of lonely, sad, angry people for not having sex? In the same vein, DeNiro, a wealthy and powerful social actor, attempts to denigrate Arthur, a destitute, mentally ill man, even further for entertainment value but then claim a moral high-ground when Arthur reveals he killed in retaliation?

Leftists hated the film before it even came out because they thought it was a celebration of a white male taking his gun out and killing everyone he didn't like, which they ascribe to some amorphous 'incel' fantasy failing to see that Arthur isn't a hero or a villain, but a victim, and a person that believes they are a victim is someone who will find any justification to do something awful to amend it. You can only marginalise people for so long before they become so numerous that they refuse to be as such, and this film is a warning to people to make an effort to reintegrate them instead of denigrating them, or we'll all be eaten alive.

It didn't start simply because upper class people died, but because the underprivileged lower class 99% were practically being mocked and shamed for shit they weren't responsible for. That was the tipping point for lower class being convinced that the upper class and political figures didn't have their best interests at heart.

I'm pretty sure they literally show him going off his meds in multiple scenes before he straight out says "I went off my meds". Like, it started with the scene where the government funding was dropped and there's a part where it shows that he ran out of his last supply.

I can agree with both opinions. While I liked all the things that Mike enjoyed and then some, I also felt like the movie was more than a bit sloppy throughout. Even though I enjoyed the relatively slow burn of the film, the pacing was clearly off at times or during certain scenes. Additionally, while Phoenix's portrayal of the character was over all quite masterful, there were more than a few stilted or awkward lines and shots from the supporting cast that made the world less believable.

That was my biggest complaint with the film, aside from that I really enjoyed it. They shoulda just left that out, or implied it rather than shown it.
