Well.. thx for the video.. now i wanted to ls swap my omega sedan even more. Its a z22xe (drive by wire without traction contro) but i love the v8 grund and feel.. the z22xe with 144 hp is not a lot for a 1650 kg car

As a Holden (06/VZ) owner, it's like seeing a mashup of a Commodore (Omega) and an Astra with the way the bonnet comes down to meet the bumper. Cool job guys, I love the story behind engine swaps...

Owner here! Thanks to the excellent Driftworks and particularly Starkey for this great video, and to Craig- a genius, legend and absolute gent, for all the hard work. Bomb Squad is an ex- MOD RLC Bomb Disposal Command Car -  originally built by the special vehicles branch of Opel with some interesting OEM spec / oddities including integrated blues/ strobes, sirens/ hailer, storage for certain 'items' and some armour. Get #dynotorque to chuck in some bits from a tuned Holden Senator HSV and hey presto. Car is a hoot! I am toying with a fruity LSX for next year.  Thanks for all the comments! Cheers

Indeed & this doesn't go into any detail on the complexities of wiring, coding for the dash, mapping etc etc. Engine swaps are almost always 3+ times the amount of work / cost than people estimate.

Can't you at least appreciate the spirit of what they've done and how good the engineering is on the build? Its the sort of thing some people dream about as kids "big engine in a car that shouldn't have it" but they actually went ahead and did it. What would you have wanted that engine/drive train to go into?

@Driftworks I'm losing my mind, it wasn't a Murciélago, it was a Diablo, it had the quad rear lights, I only had a fair quick view of it but just remembered now. The rear wing was black so I'm assuming it was an SV or styled after one.

    • Driftworks
      Driftworks   1 weeks back

I don't. There's what looks like an SV I've seen a few times in Birmingham though.

@Driftworks Don't suppose you own a yellow Murciélago or have a friend that does? Saw one being tailored last night not far from Stoke On Trent as I was leaving the area. Can't be many of those in the UK?

The Commodore of that time was a wider and longer Omega and that explains why putting a V8 in an Omega is hard.

  • Robin Marriott

Had a hand in doing one of these swaps years ago, flipped the engine mounts from left to right and the LS1 sat right on them!

I’m sure this is considerably better though, with all the HSV bits too.

    • Driftworks
      Driftworks   1 weeks back

In many ways it probably would have been easier to just do the engine swap, but yeah, it wouldn't have ended up anywhere near as good / durable I imagine.

The Omega iwas an Opel development that was used as derivate worldwide by all the different GM subsidiary companies, so i would say it's more german but who cares? Vauxhall and Opel is mainly the same company but the german customers think it's typically german and the british customers think it's typically british. The other subsidiary companies have not this almost identical portfolio of cars. Btw, i drive an Opel Omega Caravan (the Opel version of the car in the video above) myself and i love it.

@Tom Kelly thanks for the info!!

    • Tom Kelly
      Tom Kelly  1 weeks back

@alex cabello there are some commonalities to the design (the bodywork, and the oily bits), and it looks like the design team started with the same ideas - but the Holden is wider and beefier and they are fundamentally different. We knew that when the project started but it is still surprising to see the parts side by side - you would expect more sharing across the platform/ within GM. I guess they were designed in the 90s.. things are done differently these days. Cheers

Craig's done a lot, but Colum who works with Craig is a rotary guy (GarageReg) so there's often a broken rotary in the building.
