Just a point of fact, the Fallout Universe diverged from history officially in 1957, when in that universe, the transistor was not invented. Seriously, thats it; thats the divergence (unless you count Mothership Zeta, in which the divergence occurs in the 1600's when Toshiro Kago gets abducted by the Zetans.

Actually the earliest divergence between our world and Fallout’s world is in the mid to early 50’s when the microchip was never invented. That’s why every machine in fallout is so clunky and large. Larger machines also need more fuel, so all oil reserves were burned for fossil fuels.

Tanx, Cody. I wasn't actually aware of the full history inherent in the games, as FO4 was my first full foray into the series. Even that singular game is absolutely jam-packed with lore, both regarding FO4 itself and the series as a whole, but it's scattered about so much that it's quite an endeavor to glean a reasonable understanding of the lore in general. Very useful video. 8)

In the fallout universe, China overtook the Soviet Union as the US’ main enemy. The Soviet Union didn’t collapse in 1991 and existed up until the Great War. Relations actually warmed between the USSR and the US however they were never allies. The USSR also never took a major role in the Resource Wars because it had a lot of oil in Siberia. It also had Uranium so it could convert to nuclear power as China and the US were doing. The country went isolationist to protect its resources. However seeing as the Great War consumed the entire planet, the USSR couldn’t escape either. It spectated the exchange until it was forced to enter the European Resource Wars because their satellite state Romania was closer. Then it became a ruin like the rest of Europe.

We can't, because every prediction is tainted by politics and private investment. Predictions going all the way back 70 years have been grossly wrong. This is verifiable, inarguable fact. Like I said in my first comment, the Life magazine was quoting the experts when they argued all the way back in the 50s that the world's oil supply would be exhausted in ten years. If you have ever watched some of those Modern Marvel episodes, you will note that car manufacturers were tinkering with the creation of a hydrogen fueled car all the way back in the 50s because they feared a global oil collapse. The fact was that we were never in any danger of this. Even right now, some experts are predicting that we have enough oil reserves to last another 1000 years. This is no bullshit. I don't trust them though, anymore than I trust the ones who assure us that the oil reserves will run dry in our lifetime. I don't trust either one. They're both grossly wrong. Technology keeps improving the rate at which we use oil, so none of these so called experts really know what the hell they're talking about.

                                                                        • TheHoly Hay

The first uses of oil go back to the Babylonian Empire where Babylonians used oil to waterproof their boats. Egyptians used oil as part of the mummy preparation process. The Chinese built oil pipelines made from bamboo in 600 BC. The modern oil industry that we know today was born in 1859. 2019 - 1859 is more than 150.

As the largest nations they were at the forefront of this technology. However the US still largely relied on oil as did other nations. That is why. Also, the US didn’t start the resource wars. It was the less advanced nations who relied on oil more heavily. The US joined in because it partly still needed it. That’s obviously why you see gas stations while exploring Fallout. In Fallout: Tactics you can find a station that actually tells you the price of oil it’s several thousands of dollars per gallon. The US also joined the war so that after, it would have a valuable commodity to trade.
