I did buy a Vista Dell Inspiron 1521 in 2008 for my work. It had an AMD Athlon X2 TK55 at 1.8GHz with 2GB memory and a 160GB HDD. After my retirement in 2011 I moved with my Dominican wife to her country. From that moment on the laptop had constantly temperatures problems and I paid for 2-3 reparation. The laptop clearly had more problems with immigration and the high temperatures than I. I stopped using it for many years, but this year I put a AMD Turion X2 TL66 CPU in it running at 2.3GHz. The laptop was really more responsive. The temp problems were less severe and on holiday in Belgium they disappeared almost completely. Also after the CPU upgrade the laptop did not support AMD-V for virtual machines, despite that had been enabled in the BIOS, so in Belgium I ordered a 2nd generation i5 laptop. Half way my holiday, 2 hours before the arrival of the new one, the old PC died of a defect motherboard. Maybe it felt its obsolescence, but more probably it has been the result of running too hot for many years. Basically that laptop was a bad design and Athlons have never been used in any laptops except the 1 or 2 Athlon models sold in that year.

same story. actually its what am on right now typing this. i THINK this computer is like around 2006. been using it ever since. i was even able to upgrade to windows 7 with it and everything. REALLY good computer. though i can't understand how the newer ones are losing the ability to read sd cards. makes me wonder if technology is trying to go backwards.... i wonder... can any of the new ones still play dvd's or is that trend dieing as well?

Actually you can upgrade the CPU in that laptop just takes a lot of disassembly of it to get to the cpu socket.

I thought about what I would do If my new laptop didn't have an SD card reader, and I needed to read or write something to an SD card. At home I would make a network connection to an older, obsolete laptop that has an SD card reader. In the field I'd have to use usb flash drives instead. With small ones that stick out from the side of the laptop only about 5 or 10 mm I wouldn't have to worry about its getting bent out of shape should I forget to remove it before putting my laptop into its carry-case. That doesn't solve all the problems though. If I had lots of data on numerous SD cards, that I needed to access in the field, I would want to spend time transferring all that data to the new laptop's hard drive, and back it up on another device. This sounds rather time-consuming though. I would wish I had a better solution.

The budget entry laptops weren't all upgrade deadends. I had the inspiron b120 which came out a year earlier and featured the Celeron M @ 1.4ghz. Easily overclocked with software to 1.8ghz. I replaced it with a cheap used Pentium M 1.5ghz which is pinmod oc'd to 2.23ghz. Ran the celeron in a desktop sff gaming machine @ 2.5ghz aircooled. AMD was definitely behind when it came to mobile processing around that time.

You could definitely upgrade the processor in this Laptop. I had the Athlong dual core 1.7ghz version, and bought another (same as yours) for parts. I realized I could try out the 2ghz because the processor isn't soldered it worked easily.
