Damn, I still haven't finished the original Half-Life.

Thank you so much for this video. All Ghillied Up is my all time favorite level from any cod campaign, it's amazing to find little stuff like pre-alpha builds with a geiger counter and now this 'behind the scenes' if you will. I remember watching the Crew Expendable walkthough on the cod4 bonus disc with the dev's commentating behind it, wishing there was something like that for other levels, and your video was exactly what I had always hoped for.

You can search for Mackey McCandlish channel on YT. He made few years ago a developer walkthrough of the first Call of Duty. It’s so nice to watch. I’m huuuge fan of CoD1 and that was a pleasure to watch. Long time before watching his videos I even data mined his missions and was so cool to watch that code he written and by that understand better a game design. I hope he can do same dev walkthroigh with other CoDs he was a part of. He’s so nice and talented guy.

Mackey has definitely had a huge impact on the industry with his work. Very cool that he's now in a senior role at Respawn. Great detail you added about his channel. To be honest, I hadn't heard about it until now, thanks for passing that on. Appreciate you watching the video, if you want to see the channel grow consider sharing it around. It makes a world of difference :)

I'll admit this was a very fascinating level for a FPS. As a kid playing One Shot, One Kill, it was probable one of my least favorite levels, and coming back to it as an adult, the only really hard part was the end, especially on hardcore or veteran. But I don't know if this is possible, but I would love to hear the behind the scenes to Shock and Awe/Aftermath. Because finding information on those levels isn't that easy. Also maybe you could touch on how the character was originally supposed to live, according to the source codes.

      • Game Brain
        Game Brain   6 days back

Thanks for sharing your thoughts! From what I was told about Shock and Awe, there was originally plans for the level to include a number of shootouts against soldiers slowly dying from radiation poisoning, gnarly stuff. So glad you took the time to watch the video, feel free to share it around if you wanted to see the channel grow :)

So, Infinity Ward followed the development of S.T.A.L.K.E.R.? That's really interesting detail.

Yeah it would appear so, in the early 2000s it must have had so much hype surrounding it. Thanks so much for watching! Consider sharing if you'd like to see the channel grow :)

I was born in Russia. And one thing I noticed as an adult living outside Russia is that the architecture in all Soviet Uniun was the same. Same buildings inside and outside, same interior, same roads and pretty much the same parks near to the buildings.
This mission gave me flashbacks from my childhood. This was unnatural creepy.

As someone who plays games for the single player story only, I love well done scripted levels. This was an amazing example of it being done incredibly well. I know a few other games took this style way too far where it became “press x to win”, whereas this level still had you feeling in control - there was still flexibility in how you took on each situation.
COD4 lives on as an all time great for me, none of the future games in the series have been able to meet the standard it set.

So basically we can thank this for all the horrible "follow an NPC who condesendingly tells you everything to do." Might as well watch a film. Just follow the scripted path and watch the pretty set piece while the game takes control away from you

        • Geeeee8
          Geeeee8  2 weeks back

@Game Brain  agreed. That's why half life is good while COD is crap. Don't know about cod 4 but MW2 is a giant cutscenes that pretends to have player input. Like there's parts in the game where the player barely has any or no control but the game tries to trick you into thinking you do.

        • Game Brain
          Game Brain   2 weeks back

I think in the bad examples you're right, but I think scripting had a cool part to play in games. I think the best scripting gives the player the most control possible. But I agree, control and player agency must always be the n.1 priority. What level/series/franchise would you like to hear about in the style of this video?

So kind of you to say mate! I don't think it's going viral anytime soon. What I would say is if you and any other viewers are willing to share around/post on reddit the video, it makes the biggest difference to the growth of the channel.
