When I clicked on this video I assumed that the owner just neglected to change the oil. I didn't realize that the manufacturer didn't actually recommend changing the oil.

It doesn't look like the front part of the plastic cover is mounted properly.

I have never changed the oil in my two stroke. I just add some anytime I add gas. ;)

They leak oil, that's why you keep having to fill it. I guess they don't really care where the oil goes or that it's improperly disposed of... Mine has a particular spot that seems to be designed to slowly leak oil. *shrug. If I ever see the oil get dirty I will def do an oil change though. But it's like a slow continuous oil change throughout the year...

Never change oil is a great marketing approach. They're capitalising on an already existing consumer behavioural pattern and they can save money in the manufacturing process at the same time.

Almost no one who owns power yard equipment does any maintenance on it, and they buy a new mower every few years anyway. They just have to make sure it last's the warranty period and they're set.

Pretty fucking sad commentary on the average person though.

That mower is not old at all.
The actual manufacture date is the first 6 digits of the serial.
That Briggs plastic carb is also fairly new on their engines, past 5 yrs
My Poulan has essentially that same deck, difference is my Poulan isn't rear discharge
Judging by the stain at the muffler, it was definitely overfilled with oil and it spewed out of the muffler.

Not whatever plastic this is. Briggs has gone this route on all their consumer based products, except riders. Only additives you put into can destroy the seals and tip of float needle. Make it swell and no fuel will enter bowl. When the carb clogs, you only replace the main jet... a $10 part.

Only after a few months that I realized I had put the blade in backwards. I could have been one of them who put the saw in a garage sale for a couple of bucks.
