  • Should we be paying international celebrities to promote Australia?

The debate has flared this week around Aussie NBA superstar Ben Simmons, but it's not the first time things have gone sour for a visiting celebrity.

Thing about Simmons is that he's a certain kind of rich, which nobody likes.

It's "normal" to do this but I reckon Australia doesn't really need it. It's pretty much the same as funding Aussie themed propaganda movies. Probably more effective.

I once went into Adelaide Casino. Six security guards followed me around for the entire time I was there. They didn't talk to me. So I just ignored them. I brought food, and drinks (including lots of water). Then after I ate, and drank. I was escorted out of the Casino. I'm white, the guards weren't. Is it racism or something else?

The trouble with stereotypes is that they are generally, maybe unfortunately, true. If stereotypes weren't generally true, they would not be stereotypes. If you don't like your stereotype, make sure you do *not* live up to it. Simple, really.

Australia is multicultural, but white Australians are just so poorly educated on what is interpreted as racism. I wouldn’t call them outright racist, but rather uncultured and insensitive.

VaselineLenz to be honest, I don’t think that the current generation of white Australians should be blamed for what European settlement has done to the indigenous population. In saying that however, I think more of an effort needs to be placed on Australians having a stronger cultural awareness and respect for other cultures. This can be incorporated into compulsory education. To be taught what’s socially acceptable. Also, I think learning a second language should be compulsory, up until the end of high school. Putting emphasis on indigenous languages / dialects, will help Australians connect and understand Indigenous culture and the significance of its history.

To get to the point though, what would the ideal situation look like to you? What needs to occur?

Are you equally disappointed about other homogeneous non-European heritage nations', whose people are "insensitive" about migrants? Or only Australia, as you witness it?

Should we pay celebrities to promote our goods and services? It seems to work, how many people followed Fed to visit Quokkaland?

If I were paid to blog daily about my holiday in Melbourne, I would. My experiences, in my words. If I have a difficulty at some tourist destination, it's their embarrassment, not mine. If I'm barred from entry, that's my experience. If I have an unexpected good outcome, that too is my experience. I might be a little coy about the details, my benefactor might not wish to extend the same favour to everyone. If something goes awry and the cafe resolves it particularly well, I am not going to tell the world how to get a free meal.

I don't do searches. Being of the majority, I'd be surprised to be subject to racial profiling, but I don't do bag searches. The lack of requests suggests some profiling is going on, i am very rarely asked, even in stores with a security bod at the door.

If my exit is barred, I intend to protest loudly and ask for the police to be called. Police have search powers, security bods do not. I intend to do what I can to ensure the store management is publicly embarrassed.

Since Crown has a dress code in place, I feel racism had little to do with Ben getting denied entry. However, Australia as a whole, does experience racism and this is reflected in a lot of policies.

@Bill Hollingsworth The globalisation we are referring to is the current push for the abolition of the nation state, the privatization of profit and the socialization of debt, the coercion of sovereign Govts. and the supplanting of the established social contract in favour of corporate interests. I see your point of a return to feudalism, as it never really went too far away, but I disagree that humanity is locked into such a narrow vector of possibilities. Very few positive outcomes on the board though.

No globalisation is a force that started roughly 500 years ago by Christians when the Pope divided the world between Spain and Portugal ( Australia was divided between both countries) and is a fact of life. It is not an alternative to anarchy or feudalism both of which I would prefer not to live under. I would rather choose some form of democracy despite the difficulties it can and does present.

@Bill Hollingsworth You postulated that without globalization there are two alternatives, anarchy or feudalism. I understand why you are trying to back away from such idiocy, but I DID give you the logical outcome. If you didn't understand, it's because you fail to grasp the concept altogether.

Here is the thing, alot of white people think black people know each other or we are from the same place etc. WRONG. But its okay im sure you're a nice person and in time you will learn alot of things like most Australians will. Did you know africa has 54 countries? with different races, colors, culture and languages? The reason you see brotherhood/sisterhood is because when in majority white country, you seek commonality on some issues and learn from their experience of being in that country.

@s b what I meant was that I suspect is more compassionate and trusting of other black women compared to white women. Again I am making a lot of assumptions about the original poster but generally it is something I have noticed with many black people is that there is often some degree of brotherhood/sisterhood shown between black strangers and I am just pointing out that this behavior although harmless is actually a form of racism
