Nicely done Tommy. Good facts and information here for everyone that has no idea on how all this EV stuff works. :)

dchawk81 I can show you a video about a large home being off grid for 15 days by just panels on the house with 3 Teslas

@The 3d-printed Cat You're talking doomsday scenarios are you not?

A single panel will take ages. The zombies already got you.

Solar panels are woefully inefficient. It takes fields full to do anything significant.

dchawk81 neither of those are remotely true statements.

@The 3d-printed Cat If all things fail and I can't get gas, you're probably not going to have electric either.

Takes a lot more solar panels than one person can have on their roof to fill a car.

dchawk81 let’s talk about fueling. Electricity is way cheaper and easier than gas for most people. The efficiency of gas is abysmal. It’s loud, dangerous, and odorous. There aren’t many things that will kill you by breathing while working correctly that reside in a person’s home. Hell even the biggest car guy in the world, jay leno, says the future is electric cars and that Tesla has solved almost all problems with them. Now, I’m a car guy, or I wouldn’t be here at this channel before they bought a Tesla. I love the roar of an engine, the feel of it. I’ve been taught to fix my own cars. But I’m not going to stand in the way of an American company that has given jobs to countless, inspiration for the future, and hope that things will change. Now, sure it’s different, but most people don’t have gas pumps at home, people have wall outlets. If all things failed, how are your cars gonna roll? Petroleum that is sourced from over seas, or say, a solar panel. Well, that’s funny, because you need a lot to pump petroleum out of the ground, but you just need the sun and a panel for a Tesla. I like simplicity, it makes things more reliable. More independent. Less reliant.

I'm trying to visualize a car that can only be refueled at a Shell station, or only at a Chevron station. and it takes hours rather than minutes.
Yep, great selling points for EV's.

Seems stupid to double up energy dispersing machines many different ways do we need to get fuel? ...& the time needed for "charging" ...guess that is one way to slow your life down or keep you busy with nothing ...

What a pain ! Takes way too long even with a supercharger. These Teslas are a status symbol for the wealthy. Who has time for this ? I guess some do as I see them charging their Teslas and drinking lattes while they wait. I guess they can work remotely on their laptops while using their phones as a hot spot. For the rest of us who actually have to do physical work and don't have time for this crap electric cars simply do not work.

The Government will have to step in at some stage. Having different charging plugs on different cars is not the same as the VHS Beta argument or coke or Pepsi. Transport is a need not a want so there will need to be a world wide default plug. Without being able to charge at home, having an EV seems to be a pain in the butt.

This is not an EV car issue. This prioprietary and exclusive apps is companies trying to fight for market share and trying to keep you in theirs. Once a standardization organization is made, these inconveniences will be a thing of the past.

For mesnd my Tesla, it’s definitely ready for prime time. I put a 240v outlet in my garage which does the vast majority of the charging while I’m asleep, and the excellent, hassle-free supercharger network makes for easy road trips.

It's like the 1880's when electric cars ruled the road and no one had electricity in their homes. You had to leave your car at a charging garage overnight. Also the cord laying across the sidewalk looks like a tripping hazard.

In order to operate a fast charger there needs to be 480 volt source power. That is typically only available in industrial areas or larger commercial facilities. That is just one of the many issues with building out a charging network that could have any hope of supporting massive numbers of EVs.

This is why EVs and even PHEVs aren’t for everyone; and won’t be for a long time yet. First off, they are priced too high for most people; and not everyone even has a garage to charge at home. The range anxiety would bother me, too. Yes; PHEVs eliminate that. However, if you have no way to plug in, a PHEV is useless. Hydrogen would make more sense. It would be just as quick as filling a tank as many do now. The infrastructure isn’t there because so many people are focused on electric cars.
For now, I’ll be happy with my regular hybrid. At least it gets really good fuel economy.

There is literally No ecosystem for electric cars. Charging an electric car seems such a hassle and waiting time. When I can just go to the gas station fill up completely in like 2 minutes. Once electric cars charge to full in a matter of minutes then I will switch. Until then I'm a gasoline engine type of guy.

You can't exactly pick up another at Walmart! Online ordering, cost you what $100 for another one? Still leary of Tesla like iPhone!

I admire those who are dedicated enough to put up with all this, but it won't be me. And if large numbers of prospective buyers would watch this before making a purchase, I have little doubt they'd rule it out as well. All this BS to ride with power that more than likely came from a coal or other fossil fuel source? I'm laughing at all you greenie's and eco warriors. Some day maybe this is a lot better, but not today - not even close!

Companies that haven't figured out a system to where I can just drive up, plugin, and swipe? Yea I'm not playing application roulette when I find a station to keep track of which of the 50+ apps I need to use at any given time.

Overall the process sounds like a huge pain in the ass. Until they get to the point where a 100% charge takes around 15-20min while not at home, it will be a pretty big barrier to entry for lots of folks.

Unless you're really driving straight through, that is an average amount of time you'd need to stop to stretch, use the bathroom, get some food, etc.
