I knew you'd grab 25 or 6 to 4. So sick. I do think the best recorded version of Terry Kath's genius is actually by a Russian Chicago cover band called Leonid & Friends. Their guitarist Sergey Kashirin is *ridiculous* - would love to see that guy on an RB upload some day.

I doubt anybody is thinking like me in this, but here-goes: Nelson "Love and Affection". Why? Not only was Brett Garsed's in-song solo completely epic at the time, but helped it to a #1....making that three consecutive generations with a #1 which is a standing world record. Think about that a while and thank you.

You, Sir have earned my Subscription. This list could also be the Top 20 Songs of all time.
While I love every single one, Comfortably Numb is more Symphonic than Rock, but you're the expert.

42orloff thats also a new one on me? Never saw those chrome buttons, almost like a custom make hollow body guitar with way to much bolted onto it lol cool looking though

Rick Beato honestly wow! By far one of the best guitarists ive seen on youtube in a while, and just goes to show ya how amazing David Gilmour really freaking is because you killed 19 outa those 20! But no one can play like gilmour

  • David Harrison

Not a bad list. Steely Dan not so much. Peter Frampton when he was with Humble Pie

No offense but I think you've mistaken riffs for solos. The guitar is supposed to be, you know, SOLO in a guitar the beginning of the "Smoke on the Water."

          Crazzilla  31 minutes back

Zepplin... since I been loving you. If I had to make a list of "old school" tunes like you did.. that would have ended at #1. The whole song is basically a solo and so emotional. That being said.. I love older music, a lot, but your age is showing in your mashup lol. It didn't make it far past woodstock.. at all, yet rock did lol.

Is not a solo a totally improvised non rehearsed original piece of music. Half on this list are not solo's. But are pre rehearsed, repeated played pieces of music that are repeated at each different concert venue. This is what makes jazz solo's much greater than any rock "solo".

What? No Eric Clapton in the list? I have always thought that his guitar solos on Crossroads on the Wheels of Fire album were the greatest guitar solos of all time anywhere! Period!

Hey Rick, I appreciate the time effort, and your top 20 list. It ain't mine, and that's cool because it is yours and that is equally cool.
                      Thank you for sharing.
Now for a few, perhaps less well known solos please consider Brian May's ridiculous Brighton Rock from Sheer Heart Attack, the solo from Liar, Great King Rat, Doing Alright (Queen's first album). Father to Son on Queen 2. Sweet Lady from A Night at the Opera.
From the Neal Schon Library, please consider the blazing solos on Journey's Infinity - LaDoDaDoDay, and Feeling That Way/Anytime. From Journey Departure Any Way You Want It, Walks Like a Lady, Line of Fire.
From E.C. - have you considered the incredible Duane and Eric riff duel on Why Does Love Got to be so Sad from Derek and the Dominoes, not to mention Have you Ever Loved a Woman.
This could go on for days.
Hendrix - Rainbow Bridge Hear My Train a Comin is a 9:00 display of the most amazing psychedelic electric blues you will ever hear....ever.

Almost forgot one of my all time favorite Rush songs - The Lesson, from 2112. Alex Lifeson at his best, making his guitar cry.

Wow, listening to Journey Departure as I write much musical genius, especially Schon's guitar work.

A top 20 list is an impossible task, and impossibly objective. Thanks again Rick for sharing your very fine selection. David Gilmour is one of my all time favorite guitarist. His style is unique, graceful and powerful. From Shine on You Crazy Diamond to Comfortably Numb he is in a class by himself.

I loved the way you made the choices. It's actually those solos that are sounded opend and sort of human voice style. Goid job brother. 👌

First let me say that I love Rick Beato for his musicianship, and his expertise but in what world of top guitar solos is Eric Clapton's guitar work on the live version of "Crossroads" from the album "Wheels of Fire" not even mentioned in the top 20 solos of all time.. In my opinion the solo(s) should be in the top three. Very sad.

Pretty good, but suffocatingly subjective. 'Freebird' instead of 'Machine Gun', 'Fly By Night' instead of 'YYZ', 'Stone In Love' instead of ANYTHING by Jeff Beck. I will withhold my own brickbats, but one of the best things about this video is the cojones it must take to draw a bead on so many sacred cows! Respect.

I'd include Highway Star off Made In Japan. Ritchie had a lot of them, but that's probably#1.

Pretty good list and one that's difficult to argue with... but I'll do my best.
1: No Clapton? You HEATHEN BASTARD!
2: I would have placed Terry Kath at LEAST in the top 10.
3: Frank Zappa... I could think of several pieces by him that I would have included on your list (but they may not actually be "hard rock" solos).

The Steely Dan picks were great, and it's good to see Frampton here. I can even go with your top pick. There's a certain majesty about it. This is highly subjective stuff, but consider the incredibly lyrical solo in "Something" next to the neat little add on in "The End." Steely Dan's "Bad Sneakers" too.

Such as Neil Young's Powderfinger or Like a Hurricane (electric intro also), or the little-known solo by Andy Summers on Eric Burdon and the Animals version of Colored Rain (from their 1968 release Love Is) clocking in at 4:15, and Robby Kreiger's guitar solo on Light My Fire. Hendrix kills with Voodoo Child Slight Return (that intro too!!!), All Along the Watchtower, and the live version of Star-Spangled Banner - need we say more?!

The guitar solo work on the Rolling Stones 'Hot Stuff'. Just lovely.
The solo on Thin Lizzy's 'Toughest Street in Town'. Gary Moore's incindiary, raw little solo; rougher than any ten noodley heavy metal solos combined.
And Denny Dias playing the solo on Steely Dan's 'Do It Again' live. Never heard playing like that before.
