Yale Students Aren’t Surprised About The College Admissions Scandal

  • Published: 25 March 2019
  • When the FBI went public with Operation Varsity Blues and exposed a network of wealthy families cheating the college admissions system, Yale students were unsurprised to discover that their school was at the center of it all. A wealthy Yale dad had tipped off investigators. A Yale soccer coach had accepted hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes from families eager to secure a spot at the Ivy League school.

The prosecutors confirmed what almost everyone already suspected: our higher education system is no meritocracy. Vice News Tonight met with Yale undergraduate students from high and low income backgrounds as they processed the news during their spring break. "I think people with a lot of money leveraging that to get into Yale was not surprising at all," explained Lily, a Yale senior from California who identifies as lower income. "But the extent of it is shocking. I think at first I was very like 'Oh, I'm so unsurprised.' And then the next day I was like 'No, I'm actually really angry.' I think the anger took a while because it was so funny."

For students from more affluent backgrounds, the scandal made them reflect on whether or not there was a moral difference between the fraud seen in this case and the socially accepted practice of wealthy families donating money and buying campus buildings. Ethan, a freshman and legacy of Yale, argued that at least donations have some benefit. "I think there is a moral difference between perhaps donations versus bribery... the school benefits and for other kids tuition and it might pay for new programs or something that can benefit people. Bribery doesn't go to the school."

      "aggressively wealthy"
Just because some rich a*holes did that, it doesn't mean all are evil.
Yes, teach these kids how to envy & what "class" they belong to, instead of supporting & encouring them to make it.
      That was commie propaganda.

Like this is Yale. Like this is how we speak now. Like this is a top tier American University & like we talk like we are stupid like. Like the education system has degraded the standards for education so like even stupid people can get that piece of paper. Like University is a business & tuition is more important than actual intelligence like. Like this might be why the US ranks 33rd in math & 36th in science like. yah...like... yah.

My name is Josh and I’m a rising Senior at Stanford. I went to an under-resourced high school, and struggled during the college app process. I honestly feel like I lucked into Stanford. Looking back, there’s a lot of things that I would have done differently during the process, and just other things that I wish that I knew before I applied. Not trying to spam, but I built the platform that I wish that I had in high school. The platform allows high schoolers going through the college app process to book 30 minute-1 hour appointments with professional college counselors, and current college students from schools such as Stanford, Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Colombia, MIT, Vanderbilt, Tufts, UCF, UCSD, Georgetown, Cornell, and other public and private schools. Check the site out, www.schoolbudd.com. We already have over a hundred counselors on the platform, ready to help you through the process!

Good luck to everyone going through the application process!!! Especially with the CommonApp already released, our goal is to help you achieve as much as possible!

I live in Denmark and we pay higher taxes than in USA, but we have free education and healthcare for everybody. You can't buy a space in college – you have to work for it. That is the fairest system imo.

You see this is why Norway has a productive education system. If all those rich kids would have gone to school with middle class people then when they decide to go out into the work force they have a deeper understanding of wealth hence working towards a better future.

If there are race and gender quotas and there are so many wealthy white males and if they focus on "diversity", then they will have to discriminate against poor white males, no matter how much merit they display.

The donation *is* bribery and photoshopping is fraudulence. Donations may be able to be used for other students, but you're still bribing the school to let your kid into a spot they may well not deserve. In bribing the school with donations it makes it even worse imo because then the staff know what's going on and are actively participating, meaning everyone's in the wrong, while photoshopping is strictly on the behalf of the parents (though the two might not be mutually exclusive, and the parents may photoshop and then bribe the school to look the other way)
