I agree with most of the points here, except for the one about Macs being more expensive.

When people look at the price of a Windows based PC, they invariably look at hardware only. They ignore the cost of software, maintenance and devaluation, all of which play a vital role.  When you add these in, you get a very different picture to what is normally presented.

A Mac comes with fully developed and USEABLE software suite on it.  To replace this on Windows with equivalents that you would actually want to use, will cost around $300 to $500, and the licenses won't be perpetual - you will have to keep paying to stay current. Office 365 on its own costs $100 per year, add to that a decent music management app, email client, movie creation program, music creation program, etc.,  and it is not difficult to see how fast this can add up. Some of this may be possible to replace with open source software, but open source is usually far less polished, often bordering on unusable.

On the maintenance side, it is important to remember that the various versions of Windows have single handily created an entire industry of professionals to fix what goes wrong with them.  Just an average of one hour of downtime a week with a Windows machine will add up to 52 hours a year. If you only make $10 an hour, this adds up to least an additional $520 per year in costs due to lost income, and that is if you fix everything yourself. If you have no desire to become an IT professional in order to deal with the problems that WILL arise, there will be even more costs and downtime as you take your machine to someone else to fix, wait for it to be fixed, and then have to pay additional money to the IT guy.  There is also the constant time lost waiting for updates to install and configure.  Microsoft just don't seem to be able to get their heads around the fact that when people turn their computer on, they want to USE it, not wait for updates to configure.  When people turn their computers off, they don't want to have to wait around till updates finish, before they turn the power off at the wall.

Windows computers also suffer from rapid devaluation, and that Windows PC you bought for $500 will probably only be worth about $100 after 3 years. Add all this up and that $500 PC will cost somewhere between $2,360 and to $2,560 over the course of 3 years.  This works out as around $786 to $853 per year, and it can be a lot more than this, if you earn more than $10 an hour, or you hire a professional to fix your machine.

By contrast a Mac will have very little additional expense involved at all. The software that comes with it is very functional and fine for most people. If money is spent on software, it will tend to be specialised software, which would cost on either platform.  Maintenance is almost negligible, and on those rare occasions where there is an issue, it is almost always fixable with a reboot, or a quick recovery from Time Machine. This makes for close to zero downtime and maintenance costs.  Macs also devalue considerably slower than Windows PCs.  If you buy a Mac for $1,500, you will be able to sell it three years later for at least $1,200.  This means it will cost you a total of $300 to own for that 3 years, or $100 per year.

That's $100 per year to own a Mac per year, compared to between $786 and $853 per year for a Windows machine that cost one third of the money to buy.

There is no doubt you pay more upfront to purchase a Mac, but purchase price is almost irrelevant. It doesn't matter what something costs to buy, what matters is how much it costs to own.  That cheap Windows machine bought for a third of the price of a Mac, turns out to be considerably more expensive.

Best laptop I’ve ever owned. Bought a MacBook Air in 2012 and now in 2019 the OS is still stable and everything still works. Battery life is still good after 1500 cycles. Had 2 windows laptops before this and within 2-3 years one had a overheating issue and both have a performance decrease.

Among other important features of recent versions of macOS, continuity and handoff are a big one too. Not to mention privacy, in areas where apps, of both 1st party and 3rd party titles, require the user-data collection to do remote based ML computations in order to serve up specific results. This they have done by using an on-device machine learning tool as a service (coreML framework) that comes baked into macOS, so that developers no longer need to suck up an individual's data to private servers in order to do ML based computations for generating specific results. Moreover, they can data-train their ML models on their own macs so as to make them ready to handle new data that the end-user will give local access to, for carrying out on-device computations on the developers' apps, with the data-trained ML model bundled in with the same. This is huge for privacy-minded users. The competition could follow suit, but it is quite unlikely, especially for platform owners like Google, whose business model wouldn't allow that. I can foresee a time where Siri, for instance, wouldn't need to be carrying your input data over to Apple servers, to serve up specific results. Most of the computations that Siri depends on, could be done offline, with your individual devices like your iPhone, iPad, or Mac being the playgrounds for performing all sorts of on-device ML computations.
As more and more apps that rely on server-side ML computations start adopting coreML, this could radically change the way ML will be done in the future.

I use both operating systems/computers daily and prefer using my Mac. It works great, looks cool is well built and is fun to use. Parallels is amazing. When I want to run games on my MacBook Pro I boot up into an external SSD running Windows and it handles anything I throw at it.

Did you know, that Macs can open files, even *without* their file extension attached to them? When I open a picture on my Mac, I can remove the ".jpg" part of the file name - and it will still open just fine. Because the macOS doesn't care much about file extension at all! Instead., it checks the information in the file itself (the metadata in the start of the file) to "understand" it's content - as long as the data in the file are correct.

Linus u forgot to add that UNIX based systems have much thinner kernels than Windows and do much less abstraction when it comes to the drivers and hardware integration. Hence much lower UI I/O latencies and a way smoother UI / UX. This is one of the reasons why MAC is generally preferred by musicians and graphic designers !

Overall is a faster system -in every way-, and in-built apps are super useful and free to use from the start. Heck, I see people installing Microsoft Word in their Macs... I can't live without pages, it's even more inspiring to write in. Enjoying OS Catalina right now btw! always better after a software update... always better. P.S. I am a video editor, and I still prefer MacBook 15" to work on with Adobe Premiere. I don't understand what's the thing with being more "underpowered" than a Windows, I haven't felt such a thing working even with 4K videos. Ever.

I find the trackpad is extremely precise, acceleration is natural and predictable as is scrolling with its inertia, it’s just a joy to use and I way prefer it to a mouse now.

Just look at anyone using a windows or Linux machine, they all use mice because the trackpad is basically unusable. That’s one less thing to carry with you... me and my Mac, nothing else... because there’s a monitor with a USB-C cable waiting for me at work. Oh, and using the Mac on my lap, say on a sofa, like a “laptop”, I just use the same trackpad and don’t have to compromise.

Microsoft, when you sort out the trackpad I might, just might, start to consider Windows.

The problem is, Microsoft doesn't make any of those trackpads. Apple does everything itself and makes hardware and software both in the same company which makes it super awesome as it can be adapted to each other's needs. Thus no BSDs. Windows is a piece of software that has more financial flexibility and it's kinda a does it all thing as you can game on it, work on it, edit, music and wide variety of software and hardware compatibility. The one major thing about apple is, having an apple product might seem just a bit expensive in many countries but countries like India, still people use PCs and laptops cheaper than any mac. In fact, this comment is being typed on a laptop which is only half the price of a MacBook air but it fulfills the requirements just fine. Though I am willing to get a MacBook as well, it is freaking unaffordable.

As a developer who wants (needs?) to be as productive as possible, is just better to use hardware and software identical to what is being used by a huge user-base of other developers, so when you have any issues, it's easy to get help on StackOverflow or any other online forum, and you don't need to spent much time fixing things just to be able to work.
