Out in the vast coldness of outer space, there are planets that travel alone through darkness without the boundaries of a system. Here’s how this can happen – and why these frozen deserts might secretly harbor alien life.

What if it was possible to get liquid water on a rogue planet and put a quart of it in some container and drink it, would it be like regular earth water or something else.

So if a planet like Jupiter or bigger was a rogue planet and it had a moon with lots of ice, could that moon sustain life pretty much indefinitely? I think orbits like that decay, but very slowly.

@Papaya Tasty even if in a one in a trillion chance that it somehow manages to be caught in a stars gravity in just the right place where it gets into orbit and is in a zone where the temperature is just rght enough for an atmosphere to form from the ice cover melting without all the gases being completely lost into space, the extreme and sudden change in temperatures would kill everything that was living under the ice and everything that tries to leave the ice would also die due to not being able to breath air. Also consider the fact that by sheer luck the atmosphere composition has to be just right to be thick enough to deflect asteroids and deadly rays from outer space that was previously blocked by the ice.

@Quantium they will break open or the planet is caught by a star, then when ice melts, they will come to surface and evolve.

You know... since years are the time a planet revolves around the sun, do rogue planets have no years? Or does the time of the year stay the same time as when it still had a star to revolve around?

If they could see the stars, they would base time on the constellations that they would see as their planet spun on its axis. Depending on how fast the planet was hurtling through the never, they would see new constellations appearing as the old ones receded. The real question is - Could intelligent life evolve to the point to where after observing constellations coming and going across the eternal night sky, could they figure out that their own planet was a rogue AND at what speed and direction it moved? Could they backtrack their path and discover where and when they originated? Would they hypothesize that there may be planets that are trapped by stars, that may have intelligence evolving on them, despite being half boiled by the intense radiation emanating from them? That's assuming of course that they weren't, as Metallica put it "trapped under ice".

It's a weird thing to think about, a civilization of creatures unaware of the large universe around them. I think Plato covered something similar, but this is on a _much_ bigger scale. What do you suppose their culture would be like? Would they be a theocracy, worshiping the vents that give their towns heat? Or would they be scientific, slowly finding out that theirs is not the only world?
