Robert is not a doctor. Deadlifting with proper form and smart training is not damaging.

I literally just watched a video on LSU, Alabama, the Vikings, and Green Bay weight training programs. Literally all 4 of them have the deadlift as a main exercise.

Mmmmm idk about all that. I agree it can be risky to deadlift massive weight especially without getting your form in check first, but to say there aren't many benefits seems pretty silly. It hits so many different muscle groups effectively it's kinda crazy. I only started doing them about 4 months ago as I have always been kinda scared of them, but I have seen some serious gains in my legs, back and traps since starting. My traps have grown more from deadlifts than any other exercise. It is a wonderful lift and I wish I hadn't stayed away from it for so long. As long as you get your form down before stacking weight it is a pretty safe lift. Much safer than snatches and power cleans....

Of course if you only do deadlift without reinforcing your lower and middle back then you have more chances of getting injured. It all comes down to awareness and knowledge/experience.

Sounds like he just doesn't want others to reach new heights with their DL's. With a proper program and some patience, the risks are the same as any other compound movement. Most people just don't have the patience to start at 135 and progressively overload.

What makes the deadlift so hard is the mechanics. It seems (for me) that every body part has to be in an impossibly perfect position, and the movement must be flawlessly in sync throughout the lift. The margin for error to avoid injury is so small that you spend more time preparing for and agonizing over each rep to the point where you are doing way too much thinking and not enough lifting. And all it takes is the slightest error to cause significant pain to your back and spine.

Considering all of this, the deadlift is not worth the time and effort for the risks involved. It's a high-stakes gamble every time I try it and I always seem to tweak, pinch, strain, or pull something in my lower back. It's as if my body is telling me, "Look, man, I am allergic to this exercise; it feels unnatural and I am just not made for this movement."

There are other exercises I can do to strengthen and sculpt my back that don't require wracking my brain over every minute detail just to avoid ending up like Ronnie Coleman.

The reason athletes do cleans over deadlifts is for speed. Rate of force generation is what's important in sports like football, not grinding out a ton of weight. Deadlifts are good for muscle building as well as getting better at deadlifting.

I just don't have the natural posture or whatever hell else it takes to do it safely 100% of the time. I can't afford to risk long-term damage to my spine. To me, it just isn't worth it.

I'm an elite volleyball player and we do tonnes of weightlifting, and volleyball isn't even a contact sport

The real problem people have with it is that it's just a considerably difficult movement and it's much easier just to do bicep curls and make excuses not to do it lol. Imho.

But i've seen lots of football (not american) players and wrestlers do deadlifts with trap bar in their practice.

There's a bunch of people who have the outward appearance of right-minded individuals, but when you see what they're saying they turn out to be a group basically banding together their ignorance with one another, too lazy to do their own research on topics and ignorantly stating what their minds believe. People, being large =/= steroids, sorry to break it to you. It may be commonly associated with muscles, but your just being ignorant and disrespectful forcing your opinions on the man who you've never seen before. Saying slanderous things about people with NO KNOWLEDGE of the situation helps nobody, and many agree. Go watch GSP's podcast where he states he "has a 99.9% chance gut feeling" that many people who are in the fighting scene use steroids, but with lack of documentation and presentable proof, he DOESN'T SAY NAMES. If it turns out Robert uses steroids, which is unlikely, whatever; it makes me no worse defending him before there's any evidence.
