The Academy recognizes great acting in superhero movies, Heath Ledger as Joker was such a performance. Downeys performance as Iron Man was surely great without doubt, but it was Downey Jr. playing as Downey Jr. as Iron Man. Like Charlie Sheen playing Charlie Sheen in "Two and a half men" as uncle Charlie. Great, funny, a perfect match for that character but no stellar performance as an actor standing for itself.

lol, RDJ knows it's not cinema. RDJ prior to this MCU thing was actually a real actor, who took the craft very seriously and actually was once upon a time a method actor. RDJ is just keeping his bank account in check. Disney has made him a mega millionaire. As if he's really gonna give anything other than pro MCU, pro Disney answers. As if.

RDJ is a cool guy but in Iron Man he's just himself. In Sherlock Holmes he is himself. Both characters act the same. Marvel Studio movies teach nothing. There's no point at the end. Sam Raimi's Spider-Man movies and Ang Lee's Hulk 2003 had depth. Marvel Studios movies have non. At the end everybody wins.

Saying Scorsese is jealous of Marvel is like saying a star chef is jealous of McDonald's.

Scorsese is absolutely right. Is "White Chicks" cinema? Is "Ernest Goes to Jail" cinema? Is "Not Another Teen Movie" cinema? No, fuck no. You can call them movies or flicks, but I do not think they deserve the title of "cinema". They are mass appeal consumerist garbage intended to entertain the most common denominator of our societies.

"It's not cinema" is simply an hyperbole which underlines his opinion that the Marvel movies are very bad. Does he think the same thing about the Star Wars movies?

What he meant was the Marvel movies aren't high art, they're popcorn movies made to be fun, not profound or pertinant in any relevant sense. They aren't going to be studied in film schools at any point.

Martin is just bummed he's not as relevant anymore. People make what people want to see in the theaters. There is a reason house hold names don't exist anymore because the industry has gotten so much larger than any one person. Even Lucas has to give away his legacy.

i dunno martin has a point alot of these movies dont capture you...most of the problem is the oversaturated CG effects that ruin the overall appeal and make the movie age like a rotting wine. look at all the movies where they focus on the characters emotions certain scenes and musical scores...can anyone remember or hum the theme to iron man? dont even remember it although iron man was the better out of the marvel movies.

Martin meant that too much CGI is not cinema. He meant exactly that, but the way he expressed himself was poor.

RDJ is responding to the criticism of Scorsese like everybody else should have. Instead too many egotisitical people got their fefes hurt because of they were not mature enough to take an opinionated critic on the chin.

Also. Howard Stern is as always trying to stir shit up, dude quit it. RDJ has more reason to be mad at Scorsese's critic and he's not offended at all by it.

RDJ is a legend. How he handled Scorsese's comments is just pure class.

No, it's not called "magnanimous" when you are beating around the bush, trying to stay polite with your other rich buddies. Magnanimity is when you have your boot on your enemy's neck, ready to cleave their head from said neck...and then you give mercy. Magnanimity is not authentic until your enemy is prostrate before you, and you give mercy.

Watch the film 'Chef' by Jon Favreau.

It is a thinly-veiled critique at the soulless, unartistic, factory-line, test-marketed, populist, commercial way Marvel approach movies. It's Favreau's explanation why he could no longer direct movies for Marvel. It explains why Edgar Wright couldn't, and why, they laregely can't attract any actual directing talent, only yes-men looking for a paycheck for 'overseeing' the movie.

Scorcese isn't saying a superhero movie can't be art or can't be cinema. He's saying a movie being made by committee, without an individual voice behind it, can't be art.

The same people who say video games are art would probably agree that a poker machine isn't art. They wouldn't consider someone who microwaves frozen food to be a chef. They can see the same divide between art and decoration, pulp and literature etc. etc.

The later transformer movies must have spent 90% of their budget on moving part effects that are just a wasted BLUR (quite literally unwatchable) when viewed on screen.... IMHO...

Thank you RDJ. Like who cares, right? Let's call it what it is. Scorsese doesn't like those movies. If he takes jab at it and we don't know if its jealously or not, maybe just leave it alone.
We all like movies. We all think RDJ deserves an award for his performance in that character. But the fact that Fans adore him since this role and talk about it constantly, for me that's reward enough. That people like the work I did.
......and I completely forgot about what Scorsese said because I'm just thinking about how amazing these movies are and how I enjoyed them. At this point, no one else coming out of the same theater and same movie as me that didn't like it, is a person I am not going to talk to. I rather talk with someone who shares my interest.

He didn't need to steer the conversation in the direction about Scorsese but he did. Then later acts like he's okay with it. the fact that he brought it up till suggests that he's not. For what it's worth I think scorsese's wrong and I love Scorsese films
