Field Work in Iowa

  • Meeting up with my Field Work Co-Host Mitchell Hora with Continuum Ag.

    THE PROBLEM
Quantifiable soil health data and standards are lacking. This gap creates uncertainty in how to achieve soil improvements and perpetuates lack of upside for growers. If standardized and bench marked, soil health can provide a foundation for farm productivity, land value, crop premiums, and sustainable sourcing.

    THE SOLUTION
Continuum Ag’s software will import soil data from many different sources and convert to universal format so that it can then benchmark metrics such as nutrients, organic matter, and CO2 for different geographies, soil types, and cropping systems. Not only would this capability quantify soil health, it would identify soil health drivers and give Continuum Ag an ability to offer growers a high confidence road map to soil improvement.

Zach Johnson, the “Millennial Farmer” is a 5th-generation farmer who’s spent his life growing, working, and learning on his family’s farm. His wit and dry sense of humor appeal to children and adults alike. A product of the millennial generation, his appreciation of new technology blends with his old-fashioned work ethic, and he offers a unique ability to deliver his message in a way that resonates with lifelong farmers as well as those with no knowledge of agriculture.
With growing consumer awareness about where their food comes from, Zach has identified the need for an independent voice from the front lines of agriculture. Zach actively promotes agriculture by sharing his day-to-day experiences in the agriculture world while providing farmer-to-farmer education to help facilitate a collaborative conversation between farmers and the public.

China has all but ended corn imports and in the last 6 years Ag products have been reduced from 130 billion to 60 billion. Soybeans are all they have left to NOT import. Watch who buys the products you produce and in this case China had bought a lot of soybeans, not anymore, to the detriment of the Chinese people and our farmers. Change crops diversify,,,, adapt

This is a concern but because the wheat is so much lighter than the beans, the combine will "blow" the wheat right out the back. It should even reseed as a cover crop for next year!

We do summer and fall corn, it’s ususally over 10ft by may and all harvested by the end of June. Then we have a fall corn harvest near Thanksgiving. We chop all of it for silage. Farming is 365 days a year here

It also says “the contamination was manure spread on a farmer's field near one of the town's wells.” The water was contaminated from farmers and people are getting killed and seriously injured from it.

I just come here to learn and watch the amazing content you put out. But if he uses wheat and beans as a cover crop, how would he harvest and separate both of them?
