Why Megalodon (Definitely) Went Extinct

  • Published: 20 December 2018
  • For more than 10 million years, Megalodon was at the top of its game as the oceans’ apex predator...until 2.6 million years ago, when it went extinct. So, what happened to the largest shark in history?

As some of you have pointed out, the size comparison we show at 9:36 features a humpback whale instead of a blue whale. That's my fault! The illustration (from a stock photo site) was improperly labeled and we missed the mistake in our review. We spent so much time making sure we had all of the extinct species depicted accurately that we missed the (enormously) obvious error right in front of us. Sorry for the mistake! -Seth

But we know enough about the Megalodon to know it could not be hiding in the deep places we can not reach.

That and all evidence points to it being gone, dead, extincto.

The Earth is around 4.5 billion years old.
The year 2019 is just a date. It has nothing to do with the age of the earth.

It's like, if you count 60 seconds right now, that would not mean the Earth is 60 seconds old rather that you have counted 60 seconds of the Earths age.

A group of researchers have conducted a deep sea research, after detecting abnormal activities with the current in where the device was, which was miles below the sea, the researchers pulled up to see it was attacked by an unknown creature, in which the bitemarks might indicate megalodons might be still alive but surviving in the deep sea in small numbers.

Other than 'we can't find any fossils' there's nothing listed that guarantees they went extinct. Kinda seems like a pompous video title after having watched this. People said the same thing about giant squids for ages and treated them like mythological creatures. We thought the coelacanth had been extinct for millions of years until we found out they were still alive. 'Why We Believe Megalodon Went Extinct' would be a more accurate title.

@Jacen Solo Correction, we've only explored 5% of the ocean floor, not the actual ocean. That's because most of the ocean floor is an almost lifeless abyssal plain with terribly huge pressures. Remains of Giant Squids have already been found way before the actual discovery of the Squid, which means that anything large would have had some sort of impact on the surrounding oceanic fauna. This is also taking to account the fact that Megalodon itself hunted and fed on whales, and was the reason why whales in the same time period it was in could not live to massive sizes. The fact that we have the large Sperm and Blue whales today and that nothing is observed that supports the statement that an apex predator that eats mainly cetaceans is still alive, is also why we know that Megalodon went extinct. It being alive would just have such as large impact on the oceanic ecosystem that it would honestly have concrete evidence for it since the last few centuries. But there isn't.
