Collectors do not invest in the game to any considerable degree any more, furthermore they do not play the game.

Collectors needs should not ever be considered, only players, people prurchasing the product and playing the game. Just abolish the list - wait 5 years for the abolishment to be considered the norm, and then reprint the shit out of them.

Thing is the collectors also keep younger or newer players from really ever playing with these older cards. Sure MTGO has them for far cheaper than their paper counterparts but MTGO is a dying platform and clunky as all hell plus paper is just more fun. Digital is more convenient and accessible but I prefer paper when possible.

So as "holy grails" you put up a one of a kind card given for winning a tournament for Pokemon, and compare that to a Black Lotus, instead of the 1994 Champion card?

You make a good point at the end. "Well, if yer gonna laugh at us for liking cards, you guys need to admit that paying a few grand for a baseball is ALSO dumb." I stand on the ground of, "You're right. It's ALL silly."
I don't respect any kind, "extreme" collecting.
A stamp book (As boring as that sounds) with a buncha stamps that are worth 30-80 cents? Sure, that's a cute collection.
Magic and Yugioh cards? YAH! That's ok!
Buying a Magic card for 10,000 dollars? Nah...
I'm sorry but, I don't find that to be a, "Beautiful community that is passionate and cares for the rich history of the game."
I see that as an unhealthy addiction and big waste of dosh.
"But people collect baseballs for 5000 bucks-"
And I just said that, that is ALSO stupid.

... see though, Black Lotus is powerful in a format like modern, and it was powerful back in the day... But it's now 2019 (as I write this comment) and honestly, I truly believe that the true power level of Mr. Lotus needs to be refreshed: it's old, and outdated - and call me naive, but honestly, imo Black Lotus is overrated.

Let's all move aside for the true king of artifact mana rocks: Sol Ring xD

Summary of misinformation in this video:

                                          1. (5:00) Any card in the game can be created with 'arcane dust' acquired by disenchanting extra duplicate or unwanted cards, so if there is any single card you really want, you can make it guaranteed once you open enough packs to acquire enough dust, you don't have to get it randomly in a pack as the video claims.

                                          2. (7:00) Summoning a copy of Shudderwock via Saronite Chain Gang's battlecry does not activate its battlecry again; battlecries only activate when a minion is played as a card from the hand.

                                          3. (9:19) Either player can concede at any time during the Shudderwock battlecry and it will end the game instantly, so the long animation is only a problem when the losing player refuses to concede and elects to waste both players' time watching it. (Apparently there was a bug exclusive to the phone version of the game where you couldn't concede during the animation but this was hotfixed within 3 days of the card's release.)

                                          4. (11:15) Totally left out that Blizzard does compensate you when a card is nerfed by allowing you to disenchant it at its full dust value, effectively allowing you to switch it out for a different card of equal value.

I don't believe many cards will ever become as iconic or valued like the Black Lotus or the other power nine. The reason for this is two fold: At this point in time, Wizards of the Coast has enough grasp on their game to not make those kinds of mistakes twice. No card will ever be as powerful as those cards. Ever. The second thing is even if they DID make something so powerful, there exists errata now to basically fix a card. They could reprint the card later with proper text. Just changing a few words or placement of punctuation of a card effect can quickly 'fix' a card. But thirdly, I suppose, is if the card isn't put on the reserved list, it'll keep getting reprints eventually thus occasionally devaluing the card and the card in question would have to be SO GOOD that the demand would still be so high for them...and fourthly, print runs are much larger now. Even after one print run there's usually so many copies of a card out there it'd be a miracle for the demand to outweigh supply and if the demand is super high, such cards tend to get a reprint to drop the value and refill the supply.

                                                        • pawi

No, because as the video explained, only a select list of those first edition cards have the promise to never be reprinted again. Legends do rise in price, but since cards are now much better balanced than the literal alpha run, they will never reach Black Lotus status.

                                                        Dohyden2  3 weeks back

It upsets me that they listened to the reserved list complaints in 2010. I am certain that the majority of players and people who buy wizards sealed product would have been in favour of reserved list cards being reprinted in this way, but those people were quiet, or they didn't even know what was happening because it was never a problem for them, only a good thing. I personally want magic cards to be worth as little as possible on the secondary market and I want sealed product to maintain a steady MSRP because wizards is giving us new and fun sets. I am sick of masters sets giving us hugely inflated sealed product because of the secondary market, these products hurt local game stores and over charge the players.

Abolish the reserved list and start printing these cards into the ground, let players access these card, let them play with them. I have never bought a magic card because of its value, I only ever buy cards because I want to play with them and that's how it is for almost all of the people who play magic. If people complain about the card prices on the secondary market then tough, the secondary market is not wizards concern, sale of sealed product is wizards concern. The game is fun to play and should continue to be fun to play for many years.

That card is not powerful. Not even close to most powerful. Rare doesn't equal powerful.

The card's mana cost 5 (One of every color). Already kinda a crap cost unless you've got stable mana supply. Second is it's power and toughness actually gets WORSE the more you damage your opponent. Unless he's the one doing the hit to end the game, which likely your opponent wont let happen, he's just a big body doing very little. He can't be targeted by spells and abilities but that isn't the best protection in the game. It's Shroud, which is good, but you can't give him abilities to make him better because of it (Hard to give him keyword abilities such as Flying, Trample, etc without global, non targeting effects). It's only good grace is you can spend no mana to put it on top of your deck....but you have to also discard your entire hand....for a lack luster creature.

The card is rare, sure. It's a horrible card power wise. Especially when creatures today can do WAAAAAAAAAAY more for far less mana and effort to keep it around.

Because that is all i can understand from what this card actually does. I get that its a very good card but the most powerful card in magic? Super rare? Yes, overall good? Yes, but i can't find a reason to call it powerful in terms of actual gameplay, its simmilar to the lotus field but no sacing land, not to mention there are deck that use blood sun to make it so its also free 3 mana. I just don't get it

I loved your segway up to 6:23 it was very informative. This is a great documentary professional grade stuff for sure.

They dont want to print objectively more powerful cards than the p9, as it would completely destroy all major formats, upset the entire player base, and ultimately kill the game.

I don't care if the clouds parted, harps played, and Jesus himself came down from heaven in a pillar of light to sign a baseball, I'm still not paying more than $10 for it.
