I think having the umpire relay the call through the earpiece will go away quickly, but I’m having a hard time imagining how it will happen. A Siri-like voice announcing each pitch automatically over the PA might be amusing though. Really, I’m all for the robo ump but it’ll probably mean the end of an era when umpires like Dutch Rennert could add their own theatrical touch to the called third strike. That’ll be sad.

This is the best thing baseball could do. When MLB implements this, I may just start watching baseball again.

They agreed to do press to advertise the tech, but didn't want to show the software or demonstrate it?

It's better to get call right than factor in human emotions or error. I say there should be more technology in sports, not less.

I really hope they don't use this thing because it will ruin baseball. Part of the game is the umpire calling things as they see fit sometimes. The whole idea of baseball has so much surrounding it than just standard rules. There are friendships and rivals with both players and umpires. You put this crap in the game you remove a significant portion of why it's America's favorite past time. It doesn't need to be slaughtered with technology. This would ruin the classic game.

If Trackman will call the high strike -- which MLB has been unable to force (human) umpires to call -- then I'm all for it. Warts & all.

If you're going to interview Sparky Lyle about his pitching....don't you think it would be a good idea to study a little bit of film on him and at least know about him yourself instead of saying, "You threw a good slider.....so I've heard."

I'm freaking out in a good way. Umpires can still stand there and pretend to call balls and strikes but at this point they honestly deserve to go the way of the do-do bird. Some people love the drama they bring but umpires, especially home plate umpires, are power tripping fools and horribly inconsistent. They also get paid way too much to do what they do.

Maybe they should let the announcers and colormen call balls and strikes because the TV viewer sees the zone in real-time.

Jeff, great video! You should link up with Michael Lewis. His podcast Against the Rules, especially his first episode, is a must listen. It's mostly the same topic and honestly what makes this so interesting is none of these guys are the high paid star players. Lewis's theory is that this will create the most friction with star players, and then their coaches, and then their fans. This video may be a time capsule into how sentiment evolves for the technology because if Lewis is correct, a lot of people will HATE this only after it hits the Majors and affects star pitcher and star batter stats.

Will batters change their stance to compensate? Or the umpires could override.
