In this review of AMD's new Ryzen 5 3600 CPU, we look at the remainder of Intel's i5 lineup -- primarily composed of the i5-9600K -- and run generational benchmarks versus AMD's older R5 2600/2600X and R5 1600 CPUs. All modern CPUs on the chart also have overclock numbers accompanying them. Memory was 3200MHz CL14 with manually configured secondary and tertiary timings for all bench platforms, ensuring data accuracy and consistency. 3200MHz is the highest frequency that works on everything we benchmarked in this list, allowing us to control a variable while still using a reasonable memory speed. We'll do separate benchmarking on memory scaling. In the meantime, this benchmark tests the AMD R5 3600 for power consumption, Blender performance, Premiere, Photoshop, 7-Zip, V-Ray, GCC code compiling, and more, alongside gaming benchmarks versus Intel. Our reviews of the AMD R9 3900X, R7 3700X, AMD RX 5700 XT, and AMD RX 5700 are forthcoming or have already been published, depending on when you check this video. Be sure to check back regularly to catch all of the reviews -- they're mostly done! AMD vs. Intel 2019 has officially started.

I just picked up one of these today, very happy with it so far, got it @4.2ghz @1.35v using a deep cool captain 240ex AIO .
replaced my 2700x , staying alot closer to 144fps to match monitors refresh rate in BFV everything ultra @1440p .
Excellent chip for the money , may get a 3900x in the future

@Alex Gabriel Definitely. Games that would use only 4 cores will see noticeable improvements due to the higher IPC of each core in the 3600, games that utilize more than 4 cores/threads will ofc see improvements due to the 2 extra cores (8 extra threads in total cause the 6500 isn't hyperthreaded). Plus the extra cores/threads also give more headroom to run discord / play youtube music vids without noticeably impacting FPS

so how does it compare to my 200$ i5 6500 that i got like 3 years ago? :) worth upgrading to 3600?

Is it worth upgrading from a 2600? For a 144hz gamer that plays basically everything. I have quite a few instances when the cpu cant keep up and i get frame drops down to the low 50's

See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4nXoblGMu98 and also search for processor monitoring software to see how the 2600 really performs.

Someone made a good point: AMD architecture is going to drive the next-generation consoles. Microsoft worked with AMD for the new Xbox.

It's not that the 2600 isn't good enough. It's that so many gamers don't want DirectX12 since they hate Windows 10 and only like the games they already play and who never play multi-player online games. Directx11 was designed for old processors, not the modern Ryzens. Even the new MS flight sim uses 11.

Someone said that one of the Tomb Raider games play well on DX12 but is crippled by 11.

You can see a list of vulkan-supported games https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vulkan_(API) which suit the 2600 more.

New games will never progress as so many gamers are stuck in the past, and who also feel that their old Intel processor will never need upgrading. Game writers have to cater to those idiots.

50+ degrees on idle with temp spikes into 60s. Under load into high 80s. Stock cooler. Repasted and reseated. Fresh install windows install, latest chipset and bios. Is there an issue with my CPU or is an aftermarket cooler a prerequisite?

          • cwli1
            cwli1  2 weeks back

The Wraith Stealth is a bad cooler. Try the Cooler Master 212 evo or the smaller Antec a40 pro. Thermal Grizzly Hydronaut is a very good paste.

“My ONLY point of frustration came from some instability I experienced that took me a while to troubleshoot, first thinking it was probably some sort of memory incompatibility. It ended up being an incompatibility with the Windows 10 Ryzen power plan that was installed. Switched to the regular "Performance" plan and its been rock solid ever since.”

If the processor idles at a high temperature: disable all 3 bios options for Precision Boost Overdrive (PBO). Set Windows Power Plan (not AMD's one) for "Balanced".

You can use a small screwdriver to put one rice-grain-size blob of thermal paste on the CPU near the center and it will cover the two or three areas where the processor dies are as the paste will spread out when the cooler is placed on it. Thermal paste was designed to fill in the tiny cracks between the heatspreader (CPU casing) and the cooler, not as a primary heat-transfer compound. Too much paste does more harm than good so it's not needed in the corners. Use the small screwdriver to straighten any bent pins too. Renew the paste every 12–18 months. My R5 3600 was topping out around 85c under load with the Wraith Stealth cooler - switching that out for a Noctua NH-U12S dropped peak temps by 15-20c, now peak temps hover around 67-68c. Idle temps also dropped by roughly 15c. I expect you can get within spitting distance of those results with cheaper but decent aftermarket coolers like CM Hyper 212 Evo as well.

I’ve just paired up the 3600 with the Corsair h100i pro cooler
                        The cooling is really good
It goes under 50 during idle
And under 70 when gaming (and also streaming/recording) with default settings for 1080 without overclocking (not planning on overclocking my pc in the first place anyways)
I’m pretty satisfied with the temps

why is the passmark scores for the Ryzen 3rd gen so high compared to 2nd gen

                                        take the 3600 vs 2600.

score is like 20,000 vs 13,500.

no way the difference is that much?

@Steve Smith like, for example, the Floating Point Math benchmark score should expectedly be much higher on Zen 2, because (quote from AnandTech) "AMD has increased the execution unit width from 128-bit to 256-bit, allowing for single-cycle AVX2 calculations, rather than cracking the calculation into two instructions and two cycles."

@Steve Smith it's not randomly high, it's the collection of tests they use that make it look so high.

@gary but the scores hitting like 45% improvement

none of these tech review videos or articles I've read with synthetic benchmarks hit improvement percentages like that

why is the improvement so randomly high in passmarks tests

Passmark CPU benchmark has multiple different test, not just one, Ryzen 3000 has lots of architectural improvements that boost scores in them.

You can use a small screwdriver to put an uncooked-rice-grain-sized blob of thermal paste on the CPU in the middle. Also use it to straighten any bent pins. Renew the paste every 12–18 months.

A new Ryzen user wrote: “make sure windows 10 allocates enough space for virtual memory because my computer was stuttering for a while”. (I think they mean the page file/swap file. It really means they didn't do so with their old processor.)

@Ложка Поварешка 2 out of 8 cores would probably be occupied by console operating system, so 6 cores for games will still be great.
I just got 3600 to replace my RMA'd 1700 instead of 2700 because of better gaming performance and lower power consumption with no need to overclock.
3600 has pretty much the same multi-core performance as OC'd 1700.

The only thing I touched was FCLK, which I cranked up to 1800MHz, because it gives me better Latency, Write and Copy performance on my 2666MHz RAM.

does it make a big difference overclocking the r5 3600? because then i would have to pay morr for a good vrm motherboard!

20:19 could somebody link me to where I can download this Blender monkey-head project file? I want to compare the render time on my very-old computer to that of the times shown in this video so I can understand just how much of an upgrade it would be to upgrade to a new computer. I'm a big blender guy

It's a Gamers Nexus created render made for their benchmarking, I doubt it would be available. If it would it would be on the website

Yes. If you get the 3600, 2600, 2200g, or 2400G the Wraith Stealth is a bad cooler. Try the Cooler Master 212 evo or the smaller Antec a40 pro. Thermal Grizzly Hydronaut is a very good paste.
