In this review of AMD's new Ryzen 5 3600 CPU, we look at the remainder of Intel's i5 lineup -- primarily composed of the i5-9600K -- and run generational benchmarks versus AMD's older R5 2600/2600X and R5 1600 CPUs. All modern CPUs on the chart also have overclock numbers accompanying them. Memory was 3200MHz CL14 with manually configured secondary and tertiary timings for all bench platforms, ensuring data accuracy and consistency. 3200MHz is the highest frequency that works on everything we benchmarked in this list, allowing us to control a variable while still using a reasonable memory speed. We'll do separate benchmarking on memory scaling. In the meantime, this benchmark tests the AMD R5 3600 for power consumption, Blender performance, Premiere, Photoshop, 7-Zip, V-Ray, GCC code compiling, and more, alongside gaming benchmarks versus Intel. Our reviews of the AMD R9 3900X, R7 3700X, AMD RX 5700 XT, and AMD RX 5700 are forthcoming or have already been published, depending on when you check this video. Be sure to check back regularly to catch all of the reviews -- they're mostly done! AMD vs. Intel 2019 has officially started.

I just picked up one of these today, very happy with it so far, got it @4.2ghz @1.35v using a deep cool captain 240ex AIO .
replaced my 2700x , staying alot closer to 144fps to match monitors refresh rate in BFV everything ultra @1440p .
Excellent chip for the money , may get a 3900x in the future

@Alex Gabriel Definitely. Games that would use only 4 cores will see noticeable improvements due to the higher IPC of each core in the 3600, games that utilize more than 4 cores/threads will ofc see improvements due to the 2 extra cores (8 extra threads in total cause the 6500 isn't hyperthreaded). Plus the extra cores/threads also give more headroom to run discord / play youtube music vids without noticeably impacting FPS

so how does it compare to my 200$ i5 6500 that i got like 3 years ago? :) worth upgrading to 3600?

Would it be worth upgrading from the 2600 to the 3600? I've been editing with 4k footage lately, even though i still render at 1080, and i've noticed my computer starting to struggle with it. So i'm wondering if goin from the 2600 to the 3600 would be enough of an upgrade to at least ease the workload, or if i would need to jump up to the 3700? I'd also be going from an RX580 to the 1660 Ti. Ram would go from 3200 to 3600 as well for the build, 2x8gb. I'm trying to stay just under 1k, but also don't want to make these efforts pointless.

Is there anybody here now? i am thinking between 3600(200 euro) and 2700(150 euro) which one is better for gaming in 1440p with a 5700? on the long run the 8 core can have the same advantage as the 6 has the advantage now ower the 4 core intel processors or the IPC and clock advantages make it better and worth the extra 30% price in this case? Mobo B450 tomahawk good be quiet cooler so only perf is what metters.

one of the best reviews ever on the 3600. I tend to go with Intel by default but seeing these results, it's a no-brainer, at least in the 3600 price range. True the 9600k does better in gaming, but the 3600 is such a great value and equals the 9700k in benchmarks, that the 9600k becomes irrelevant. I just wish AMD's cpus could boost as well in freq as Intel, then AMD would dominate.

Do you think it's the stock cooler or silicon lottery or both?

Harkov Dent both stock and PBO were using up to 1.46v and therefore clocks would stabilise at 4GHz due to increased thermals along with bouncing around all over the place vs fixed when under load - could probably tune it some more myself

Wouldn't letting it boost on its own give you better performance if you got ABBA or 1.0.0.4 or you're old school and prefer all core OC

I know this is late, but another difference between the 3600X and 3600 is that the X variant comes with a wraith spire cooler, where as the default comes with a wraith stealth cooler.

IN many titles, even NEW ones the 8600k destroys the 3600 sometimes by such a large margin it's damn near a gpu upgrade.
20-50 fps lol. I made the right choice.

The 9600k is an AMAZING killer gaming cpu. EASILY overclocked to 5ghz. And it destroys all amd cpus atm, by 20-to sometimes 50 fps like in world of warcraft (my main game).
who the fuck cares about compressing archives? encrypting, and rendering 2 minutes faster? LMAOO

it doesn't matter at all to a gamer. Someone who wants mainly a workflow, likely has the money to get an i9 or a 3900x ect.

@Ayy Yo You will never get a 3600 to 4.5.
And games run awesome now on the 3600, I'm not taking away from the 3600. It's a great cpu, and will continue to go nicely into the future.

For me personally, for what I play, the 9600k at 5ghz just wipes the floor, absolutey wipes it. I bought a 3600x first! had to return it tho. It requires too much high speed ram, memory tightenings and things to squeez that performance out that I wanted.

I just wanted a WoW (world of warcraft, and skyrim modding) killer machine, and intel is just the way to go for that.

                                    Enjoy your cpu! :D

So what I’m seeing is that Intel lowered prices by $50 or so and is still faster. With slower RAM. At least AMD isn’t trash anymore, though, and definitely has application in the space. They’re here to stay now.

Really odd results on power consumption. Tought having less cores/threads and also tech improvment advertised i was expecting 3600 to consume much less power than a 2700 but it actually consumes that same to more . Hope my cheap b350 can handle it.

There are 2 types of people who watch Gamers Nexus (GN).
1: People who know what GN is talking about, and appreciate the straight forward, scientific analysis and reviews.

It's not that the 2600 isn't good enough. It's that so many gamers don't want DirectX12 since they hate Windows 10 and only like the games they already play and who never play multi-player online games. Directx11 was designed for old processors, not the modern Ryzens. Even the new MS flight sim uses 11.

Someone said that one of the Tomb Raider games play well on DX12 but is crippled by 11.

You can see a list of vulkan-supported games https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vulkan_(API) which suit the 2600 more.

New games will never progress as so many gamers are stuck in the past, and who also feel that their old Intel processor will never need upgrading. Game writers have to cater to those idiots.

You can use a small screwdriver to put one rice-grain-size blob of thermal paste on the CPU near the center and it will cover the two or three areas where the processor dies are as the paste will spread out when the cooler is placed on it. Thermal paste was designed to fill in the tiny cracks between the heatspreader (CPU casing) and the cooler, not as a primary heat-transfer compound. Too much paste does more harm than good so it's not needed in the corners. Use the small screwdriver to straighten any bent pins too. Renew the paste every 12–18 months. See https://binged.it/2ZL6INa
