Ask 10 guys in the gym what they think about overtraining and 5 will probably tell you it doesn't exist and the other 5 will be right! Overtraining is a very real problem for the natural lifter not aided by performance enhancing drugs. In fact, your body has a limited capacity for recovery (even when getting optimal sleep and nutrition) and therefore training volume must be respected.

The concept of overtraining revolves around establishing the minimum effective dose to elicit a change in your muscles. Going beyond this dose (or volume) begins to invite muscle damage or a depletion in your body's reserves needed to fuel your recovery. That said, undertraining (the opposite of workout overtraining) can also be a problem. This comes when the workout intensity is lacking and not enough of a stimulus is provided to the muscles to cause them to have to change.

The secret to a successful plateau free lifting experience is to be able to identify the symptoms of overtraining and then modify your exercise or bodybuilding workouts to eliminate the volumes causing the overtraining.

Those that are experiencing signs of overtraining or are constantly over working their muscles will become more irritable, will feel more fatigued, might have a higher resting heart rate, and see all strength and size gains come to a halt.

Other channels on RUclip have addressed the concept of overtraining but perhaps not from the same shoes as many of the guys that are watching the videos and seeking out the information.

Correct me if I'm wrong on this bu t I heard Russian elite weight lifters used to train 1-3 reps ONLY a day doing their maximum on that set. This was way back maybe 30 years ago

Through experience optimal is 5 super sets per session . Each super set has 4-5 exercises of 15-20 reps . The exercises combining picking up light weights together with squats or step ups to strengthen the heart and burn fat while increasing muscle mass . Should definitely not be more than 1 hour in the gym .... For me , if I’m not sweating or tired by the end then it don’t count . I used to do it all wrong wish I listened to Jeff’s advice long ago !

I ALWAYS do super sets and drop sets within each exercise. No way I am near those 45 seconds for each set; 2 minutes at least sometimes 3 depending the muscle group and exercise. I train for hypertrophy... am I doing it wrong?

I’m about 30% body fat and 36. I’ve been lifting weights and doing Tabata training since July. I track my nutrition on the app “looseit” I stay under 1900 cals , my macros do suck. About 120-140 grams of protein and I try to stay under 100 grams of carbs, sometimes I do other times I don’t. I can see a physical change in my arms and chest. But man I got on the scale yesterday and I gained 20 effing pounds. I know this is a limited amount of info I provided but any hypothesis on why this occurred?

So I am doing muay thai at a gym and I also try to build some muscle so I can spar with the other guys that are much more bigger than me. I am training alone without a coach or something, I am just trying to build muscle.
So my workout routine is 20 minutes each muscle group, it is very intense and it hurts a lot. The whole workout is about 3 hours and 20 minutes and I do it every Thursday and Sunday. And I also eat a lot of proteins, like about 150g of protein and I have about 65 kg and I also get about 7-8 hours of sleep everyday.
So I think that I am training pretty hard but I still don't see muscle growth at all in what I am doing. I try to always pick different weights and train harder and harder, but I don't understand what I do wrong. So how many hours should I train and what am I doing wrong ?

I am asking 'cause this 3 hours and 20 minutes are very painful and I really don't like them at all but I just want to build muscle and if I could just train 1 hours for my whole body and gain muscles it would be nice. Btw. I am 15.

                                                                              • Uriel Guerrero

Did not lose a pound for the last 3 weeks. Caught a cold and decided to stop working for a few days, 4 to be exact. Lost 2 pounds, doing nothing. Is this a sure sign I was overtraining?

However that is quite a bit so I assume you would've lost a bit of both muscle and fat. Maybe incorporate 1 more rest day into your week to see if a pattern starts to emerge? Even if you just go for a walk that day.
