Scotty, I live in Chile and believe me or not the state havent realized yet that lithium should be owned by the state and export by them. Instead of them its a private entity who does it. Increíble. Also important to mention that the actual president was once part of a Bank firm (banco de Talca) and he flew to The USA With more than a hundread of millions.

Hey Scotty, thanks for the great videos! I watched this earlier today and it got me thinking. How reliable do you think this would be? Is it a viable option to make an unreliable or old car daily-able?

Not sure converting an ICE into full electric.
Where are the batteries placed? Surely somewhere where it isn’t safe. I can imagine the balance of the vehicle will be compromised. What surely will be compromised is its safety. In an accident those batteries could be a real hazard. Nope not pursuing that idea.

Easy test to see which engine is better for the environment Electric or gasoline. Turn on a gasoline engine in a closed garage turn on an electric motor in another garage that is closed. Have one person stand in a garage with the gasoline engine and another with the electric motor for an hour and see who walks out after the hour. The person that walks out of the garage that is the engine that's better for the environment.

Scotty is pretty right about almost everything. However he is wrong about needing to beef up our power grid and power lines. You charge your car at night after you get home from work. Most likely you will use a timer to start charging just after midnight when demand for electricity is at its lowest. The amperage is pretty much the same as running a clothes dryer.

Now if we can get super capacitors to hold just 60% of the energy per pound as a lithium ion battery we could charge up way faster and use way less amperage. There is a lot less resistance when charging up a super capacitor compared to lithium ion batteries so you need a lot less electricity. Your average lithium ion batter costs like $0.07 cents per kilowatt hour to charge. A super capacitor just costs $0.006 cents per kilowatt hour to charge. You could have a bank of super capacitors mounted on your wall in your garage that trickle charges all day long drawing very very little electricity. Then when you get home or just before you leave charge your super capacitors that are in your car in about 30 seconds from the super capacitor bank on your wall. Basically a 24 kilowatt hour super capacitor in your EV would give you a 50 mile range and just cost $0.15 cents in electricity. Super capacitors don't degrade like lithium ion batteries. They last 15 plus years easily and don't need heating or cooling. Heck just pull into a charging station if you are low. Pay a buck and in 30 seconds you are on your way again and the charging station just made $0.85 in profit. If the charging station is powered by solar panels you are now pretty much carbon neutral. Slap some solar panels on your roof at home and you are carbon neutral.

We just have to change our fuel filling habits a bit. Nice thing is no stinky gas to handle. Probably make it robotic so you don't even have to get out of your car and in 30 seconds you are fully charged and on your way. Any parking lot that has electricity can trickle charge multiple banks of supper capacitors so you could easily get a charge in any store or restaurant parking lot. How about as you are waiting for your fast food order at the drive through you get a quick charge with your fries only an extra $0.75 cents. Or perhaps they will offer free charging with every purchase.

                                                                  • holmesb88

                                                                      • Daksh Pat

The only "green" electric vehicle is the one that uses lead-acid batteries or some improved version of them. Lead-acid batteries are cheap, robust, easily recycled, and the entire life cycle can be done in the U.S. Sure, they don't have the power-to-weight ratio of lithium batteries but, is the tradeoff worth the negative externalities? IMO, no.

Nickel cadmium batteries can also be sourced entirely in the U.S. (secondary sources in politically stable countries) and would be the best option. Ni-cads are not as easily recycled as lead-acid batteries, though. There would have to be specially made Ni-cad battery packs for the car and the automaker would be obligated to take them in for recycling when the old batteries need replacing.

I'd like to see an automaker resurrect AMC's Electron (Armitron) car. It looks better than ANY electric car out there at this time. Hell, GM should have revived the old Electrovair instead of that bad cartoon of an electric car, the "Volt."
