I hate notches and hole punches. Hole punches less than notches... but they are atill distracting. It sucks extra because galexy note 10+ has steller card cases i need but 1 plus 7 pro has no hole punch and quick charging but no wireless!? This is the worst year for phones period. Atleast with the note 9 you have an almost complete package... but theres still no definitive choices. And that sucks because tmobiles plans are basically a waste if your not upgrading every year, not to mention i absolutely hate curved screens! Not only does it cause a stupid line of glare but it makes screen protector a nightmare! What i want from 2020:
1)thin chin and forhead slightly better that note 9
    3)Flat screen
4)new battery tech (not bigger battery, different and better technology)
    6) more green

Notches and punch holes were ok but for me, I want an s7 style phone with the latest processor, 8-12 gb of ram and 128-512 gb rom. I'm 100% fine with bezels and flat screens.

I just can't do it. I'm upgrading next week. I keep tossing between s10+ and note 9. I want a bigger screen and up to date hardware. Last gen hardware seems like a better trade off for no screen intrusions. All I can think is, if I went and bought a brand new tv. Take it out of the box, turn it on and there was a black circle/oval in the corner. I'd take it back.

I watch videos quite often on my phone. Notches and hole punches are a big no no for me. This is a horrible solution to a problem that never existed. I feel like s8/note 8 and s9/note 9 designs were fine. So they have a bit of a chin and forehead (is that what it's called?). They aren't massive or intrusive. Maybe it's not 100% screen, but at least you're using 100% of that screen.

I'm just going to wait a couple years till the get the camera behind the glass, it makes me anxious. I'd rather have a small bezel than a out of place hole.

Must agree on that part when Dave said... Bezels are still better than notches or hole punches. When i ise phones with such the first thing I need to know is if it is an AMOLED... and if such aesthetics can be hidden... Cuz I ain't the biggest fan of it. And why should it be AMOLED? So I can easily hide it thru a black bar that can cover it. I dont mind the bezels as long as it is not very big just like with Note8 and Note9 but going all screen and making such ridiculous cutouts and notches are just overkilling stuffs. Note8 and Note9 could've been the perfect phablets IMO if they just placed the rear fingerprint scanner at the upper middle portion just below the main camera lens (Note8) and they added an under display fingerprint scanner on it (Note9). But since Samsung has finally sort of nailing the New Infinity Display thru Galaxy A80 which happens to be a midrange phone, it may come to flagship level phones quicker and sooner than we could ever notice.

Since these phones have hit the $1,000 mark, I'm just not thrilled about paying that kind of money for something with that kind of compromise. My current phone was $500 in 2015. It is 152x78.4mm with a 5.7 inch diagonal display and obvious bezels. It works fine for me and I don't see any pressing need to pay $1000 (today) to replace it. Now a Galaxy S10 is 150x70.4mm with a 6.1 inch screen, no bezel. If for some reason my current phone died and I spend $1,000 on a new phone whether a Galaxy S10 or any other phone... I'm pretty sure I'd be happy with all the other improvements over the phone... RAM, processor speed, battery life, OS improvements, camera, weighs less, smaller dimensions, larger overall screen, brighter display, etc.

However, since my phone still works, and I don't see it worth $1,000 to me to get a phone which is still only slightly better (the RAM, processor, battery life, etc.) of my current phone isn't an issue today. I am still waiting until there is some big feature in the phone which is significantly better than my current phone. If I'm really interested in getting a much bigger display... why is 6.1 vs. 5.7 inches that good of a deal? Why not wait for a 7.5" foldable phone to come into use if screen size is that important? Or get a phone with a camera which pops out? It has to be a rather niche market for someone who really is obsessed with screen size (I must have a 6.1 or 6.2 inch display with no pin or notch) but doesn't want any of the obvious ways of getting an even larger screen without the notch -- a larger device (with bezels), camera/bar which pops out, folding display, or (heck) just buy a phone and a tablet.

Things are just getting so stupid. I wish the Note 9 would have an under the screen finger print reader, but I think I'll just stick to the Note 9 if the Note 10 is going to have a stupid hole punch and rumors has it that the Note 10 will no longer have a headphone jack. I'll definitely be sticking to the Note 9 then.

Samsung was actually already able to produce real full-screen smartphone, but they kept it for next one or two GEN. for two main reasons: finding customers' needs and acceptance, and keeping their power for the next battle. If customers consider punch o phones are great enough, and there is no other product or thread going to change the demands, then they will keep using this design until customers tired. I am now using Vivo NEX S,
and I am happy for everything I got from it except for the chin, which makes it imperfect.

For any full screen content just flip the phone so you have the hole punch bottom right side. Also the small amount of screen around it creates a mental image of what should be there. As long as your not focusing on it. If you have a s10 watch this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qhp2AEEhK3c some excellent hidden features.

The best part of trying to achieve an all screen phone is that you get a small form factor phone with a screen the size of a "plus" phone from 4 years ago. I hate having a large phone just for a large screen. S10e gets it right. Right sized phone with a large screen

If people stopped upgrading phones and were just okay with the current tech, innovation would dry up. If you look at the economy, an average person spends a large amount of income on laptops and computers, the only products who are really pushing tech. Everything else is just consumable, made by raw labor, and doesn't really improve. Tech is the one place where we're improving humanity by supporting.
It's the biggest machine of progress.

Also, the tech that allows for those decreased bezels and spec bumps that so many people bitch about are the results of billions of dollars of research. It's not that companies aren't trying to innovate. They're perpetually gunning to 1 up their competition, so the fact that this is what we see is a testament to being the best we have right now.

I think the fact that our culture values "new" instead of just functionality, of "if it works, don't change it", is one of the few things we got right.

How are they not solving a problem? Phablets were getting out of hand a few years ago, people were laughing at the size of devices people were holding to their ears. Sure, there wasn't actually a problem per se with phones but every company making any product wants to increase value over time, that's not "playing the consumers", it's just technology moving forward.

Last year ya'll were praising phones for the amount of increased screen real estate we're getting in phones of the same size as before, but now it's become a gimmick? Aside from just increased value and fierce competition, I feel like smartphones are the premier sign of heading towards futuristic tech/communities coz of its potential and it's development in the amount of time it existed, coz God knows laptops haven't gone anywhere (same cost for ~4GB RAM 720p/1080p since ~2013...wtf?). In this information age, no doubt it'll be a focus for a long time (you're connected to the world and the world is connected to your personal data - symbiotic relationship).

EDIT: Also, stop making it seem like companies are forcing you to buy a new phone every year, that's totally on consumers. These flagship devices are designed to have value for over 2 years but people just want the latest & greatest they can afford, so I don't think they won't be able to sell phones if they can't get crazy innovative.
