A Textured Hair Fee?

I'm a half Puerto Rican and half Dominican female with naturally curly, sometimes unruly hair. My hair soaks up conditioner like I been living in the dessert with no hydration for years at a time smh.

Anyways, I wanted my hair done so I went to this Dominican hair salon around the corner from my house one day. These ladies complained about everything, from women with long hair to kinky curls, etc...but one thing bothered the hell out of me. Every black girl that came into the salon and would ask for a blow out was immediately told they would also need a perm first. Their hair wasn't looked at, taken down or anything first. They were immediately dismissed back to their homes with more money for a perm they may/may not have needed. I found this extremely ignorant, considering my own hair resembled some of theirs'. Nobody said anything to the ladies who worked here though. And I was only 13. Needless to say, I told my mom I was never going back to that salon again.

In the hood if u get braids they ask u to come with blow dryed hair or they charged u extra. So it’s in the black community too

I have been charged extra by an African salon when I got braids because of my texture. They said it would be easier if my hair was relaxed.

There’s places that charge $200 for a curly haired cut vs $40

All I know is that salons charge me extra for my hair because it’s thick , but when I ask up front how much it will cost they give me a number but at the end they say it is more due to the thickness which meant more product.

I don't think them charging extra is a bad thing. But for them to call it "texture fee" makes it discriminatory. Just tell them the price and if they ask why, maybe it's high, then tell them that they use more products on your hair. And I mean this for like salons that aren't like necessarily for black hair.

Y’all the conditioner cost more for us with curly/kinky/hair. It’s not that serious. Natural hair salons are usually more expensive as well. But she definitely should have been notified beforehand.

I've never been charged extra for having kinky hair because I go to black hair salons. If I go to a white hair salon, I ask if they have someone who does black hair, if they don't - I leave. I also live in NYC. Maybe "textured hair" is more of an issue elsewhere? Do white, curly-haired women pay the fee too? Lemme watch the other four minutes of this video...

They were wrong to a certain extent. I have thick long 4b hair. This takes more hair products and more time if the beautician takes care of the hair and doesn’t just rake through it. I can understand why we sometimes can get charged more but I don’t think it’s fair at all

Some of the topics on here do not need to be discussed, simply because not all of them are relatable and ppl that can’t relate have so many opinions 🤐.

Speaking as a hairdresser for 18 years , the reason it is more is because Usually hairdressers run on a schedule especially if it’s not a walk-in salon .If it is a salon where you make appointments this hair is taking up time for another appointment because it’s longer or a has a different texture we have to charge more because were taking up more time out of our schedule ,that is what people don’t get. What is sounding crazy to me with that these girls are saying is that there is no difference and that it is not more work in comparison to someone that doesn’t need to be flat iron just a quick blow dry it absolutely takes longer let’s get real here people. The reason the more ethnic salons do not charge more is because they already have their time and their price set knowing that is the type of hair they will be doing because that is what most of the clientele has.Me personally I have clients that have curly or very tight curls and if they want to come in and straighten it I just block off more time for and there is already a set price for curly hair so nobody ever complains because they get it.

I definitely get charged extra for extra bowls of color on my long, pin- straight "wonder bread white" hair. It says it on my receipts. It's made me contemplate cutting my hair. So, I guess charging for extra product use I can understand. BUT, BUT, BUT this should be explained prior to the service and never described as a "texture fee". It's just like ordering more food and paying for the additional "products".

This is why I stop giving them my money cuz I knew it was completely unfair to charge me a hair texture I can’t control. Completely disgusting. Just go to black owned natural hair salons for expert professionals and fair prices 🗣👏🏾

I live in London and been going to Aveda Institute for about 10 years. I was recommended when I had sisterlocs and been seeing the same colourist since then and wouldn't let anyone else colour my hair. He's a white guy. I've also had my now natural hair cut there a few times by black stylists. They have specialists who can do afro hair and have specific natural hair specialists too. It costs me much thank I used to pay but I'm super happy with the results and the experience has been way better than any black salon I've ever been in. For me it's an investment in me and it's worth it.
