On paper the Alienware Area 51m should be a completely capable desktop replacement, but how does it stack up in the real world?

I like how you breezed over the temperature throttling
Anyone think Riley sounds like voice actor Todd Haberkorn?
I just bought the zephyrus gx701, I do not see how this laptop can compare to it in any way. Who the hell wants to have 2 power bricks on a system?
I dont give a fuck about Glass wire
*cries in poor*
CHONKY fans
I have a black aleinware mouse
I just financed this... Wonder if it was wise.
@k0p The good news is they have a promotion right now if I can pay off the laptop before it ends no interest will be added.
If you had to finance something that cost only a few thousand at most, it wasn’t wise.
Can you turn the eye tracker off?
Can you turn the eye tracker off?
and i thought my alienware 15 r2 was good :(
Imagine having Razer Cortex on this machine. You'd get way better FPS. My pc gets in Grand Theft Auto V max settings around 200 - 300 FPS; In Fornite 200 and in Call of Duty BO3 around 150 FPS.
This pc would wreck my pc. No complains at all, and I'm planning to buy it :D
My Specs:
Processor : Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6700K CPU @ 4.00GHz (8 CPUs), ~4.0GHz (4001MHz)
Memory : 16384MB RAM
Available OS Memory : 16304MB RAM
DirectX Version : DirectX 12
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 4GB
Corsair Watercooling
1x 350GB SSD (C Drive with Windows)
1x 510 GB HHD (Extra Storage)
1x 1000 GB (1TB) HDD (Also Extra Storage)
1x Samsung 860 Evo 1000GB (1TB) SSD (Where my games are at)
So just buy it at as low performance as you can, and buy the GPU CPU etc?
Try Red Dead Redemption 2 on that laptop.
Dude! Is there anything good from you to say about this laptop?? You have roasted it! At the end you'll say it's useless...
These guys are funny. I wanna see more reviews by Alex!
Well intel 10th gen coming with lower price and it will be lga 1200.So upgradibility of cpu become toast.
i thought these guys are copying linus tech tips then i realized im watching linus tech tips . NOW GO AWAY .LOOK AT THE OTHER COMMENTS
SKELETON SKUM
The fastest laptop should be Asus Pro Art, the Quadro RTX 6000 on that thing is basically a down clocked Titan RTX
They should release one with 240hz model, as it would take advantage of the hardware better.
1080p is perfectly fine for 17 inch.
I'm waiting for asus mothership review~~~
If you want sound buy headphones dude. If you want better visuals upgrade to a monitor. Most of us buy these laptops for traveling... this is a badass laptop stop being a bitch dude.
Would is this laptop be good for land parties
I just dont see the point. You could build a gaming desktop with a 2080ti and a reeeally good laptop for when you need to be on the go. And its 2019 so just have all your files backed up on a cloud to access them between the 2
You have to say it turns your software into hardware. Missed opportunities.
4500 , u can make a 50inch desktop gaming rig for that moni
or u can go to strip club and have the day of ur life
Urgh! I was afraid of that... I have a lot to say about the Alienware and I doubt anyone have time to read all of it but honestly, I wish I did before I buy mine! Because all the reviewers kept saying the same thing over and over again. "Don't buy an Alienware, it's from Dell!" But why...? TELL ME WHY, well, here's why... this is my true experience with it within a single month.
So sure, the recent Alienware laptops had great reviews all around. They're built strong, they sound amazingly well, the screen quality is always impressive, the cooling system is pretty impressive and the performance is quite good, but there is more important flaws which most people fail to point out. It's Dell, and a lot of people like me kept saying that without giving a reason as to why "Dell" is to blame. It's their software, it's terrible! They don't know how to do a single programming properly, it's so buggy, I wanted to toss my Alienware 17 R5 out the window the first week I got it. I'm not exaggerating here.
The Alienware Command Center for instance, the software which will allow you to adjust the Overclock Settings, setup your games Library, the AlienFX to allow you to edit the lighting effects on it and setup profiles for various games and such, and the Fusion option to access some important information such as the CPU and GPU and Memory Temperature, Voltage, Usage, Memory and Frequency along with the thermal management to create a profile for your fan speed, power management which is only a shortcut for when you want the PC to go to sleep, or what happens when you close the lid, things like that, the Audio Profile, which I barely even touched, it's basically the equalizer settings with profiles for movies, music, shooters, racing, RPG, things like that and some do sound great. And then there's the Audio Recon Profile which is some kind of noise indicator on your screen when you're playing some FPS games, a little circle will show you which side a gunshot is coming from, which is not something I really used, it does feel like cheating a bit too...
Now, about the bugs... right out of the box, the Alienware Command Center was outdated. I had to install a newer version, but it would not let me. So I had to do a clean installation by uninstalling it and wiping out the rest of its files through the registry editor, including all of the other features which is AlienFX and AlienOC for Overclocking because they all depends on the newer version of the Command Center. Despite doing a clean installation, I kept getting pop-ups telling me to install the newest version of AlienOC, which it was. No matter how many times I was trying to re-install it and wipe it out from the system, it was giving me the same pop-up every time. Sometimes it was the Command Center that needs updating but it was already the latest version. And every time I was running it to change something, it was wasting 2 minutes of my time trying to install and update for it to then tell me it can't be done for whatever reasons.
On top of that, the Audio settings through the Command Center are tied to Realtek, and don't get me wrong but I believe that Realtek is a piece of crap. Every time Windows update was somehow updating Realtek, my headphone jack wouldn't detect my headphones and I had to wipe out Realtek from the system and reinstall it to then be able to use the control panel for it and tell the software to stop trying to choose what I want my headphone jack to do, like when it asks me if I want my headphones to work as a microphone, headphones or both. Because sometimes just that pop-up wouldn't actually pop-up and because of that, there was no sounds coming from my headphones until I can accept something. That was annoying. And if Realtek was having issues with the control panel like "This version is not compatible with your OS' or whatever the error was which randomly happened when I tried to fix my device detection, the Command Center just wouldn't let me choose a profile for a game.
The Library, completely useless. First, if I add a game manually and I accidentally add the wrong .exe for instance, then I'm stuck with it in my Library, I can't remove it. There's no option for it. Also, there's no options to add the game information like developers, publishers and the genre. The software has to detect that itself. You can't just open up a file and add that kind of info. I tried in the Alienware forums a year ago and guess what, I have tons of likes and no answers... nobody has a solution for it, the forums are dead. Whenever you encounter a bug, nobody will try to help you because barely anyone owns an Alienware or knows how to fix whatever issues you're facing.
Another one, AlienFX which is the pretty lighting effects on the keyboard. I was playing Agents of Mayhem, a pretty fun game which support AlienFX. It's supposed to change the lighting effects on my keyboard whenever my health is low and things like that. But instead, the game managed to break the AlienFX permanently, forcing me to do a factory reset. It was that bad, trying to do a reinstallation of the software and drivers did not fix anything, on top of that the best solution was to also reinstall the Command Center, which would require me to also re-install AlienOC, basically breaking everything in the Command Center. I contacted the developers who made Agents of Mayhem and... they had no clue about the AlienFX, apparently they have no business with its features. I asked them, how come you don't know anything about it when you guys added the support for it through the in-game settings?! They said it was a good question, but they really had nothing to do with this feature... In the end, I ended up digging in the System32 folder and renamed a .dll file meant for the AlienFX to something the software couldn't find anymore so no games could interact with it.
Phew.. that's a long wall of words.. sorry about that. Anyway, last issue I faced was with Killer Network Adapter, my laptop was stock, I didn't order it customized and I think I should've. Although I'm sure a small upgrade myself wouldn't hurt but anyway.. this thing caused issues. I read about that way before I get my hands on this Alienware but I didn't really think it was that much of a deal.. Well, Killer Network sure own its name because it keep giving me a Blue Screen of Death. Oldest or latest driver version, it doesn't matter, wiped clean and re-installed will still cause a BSOD because this thing keep trying to access memories without authorization. In the end, I ended up uninstalling the driver to stop if from working and I simply keep on browsing the Internet with the cable.…
Since this PC was stock, I kinda had regrets. They are definitely NOT generous with the storage space... The OS drive has a capacity of 104 GB and right out the box, I was left with something around 40 GB. Today, I got 19 GB free and the whole drive is compressed. Next is the USB slots. There is only 2.. the 3rd one a Type-C and I really hate that thing because then I was forced to buy something to allow me to plug other types of USB cables.
And there's no HDMI port, instead there's this... Alienware GFX entry port for an external graphic card, I forgot what that's called and honestly the power upgrade cannot be that worth it...
Gaming PC 2500
Gaming monitor 750
Sound system 500
Chair 450
Desk 250
Mouse 100...
Gaming laptop 2000 and 13% slower Because I travel a lot. And 15 fps drop is irrelevant at 90 fps...damn elites everywhere.
Which one is better this or the razor blade pro 2019?
I'm very sorry but this review was dogshit. Give this good looking mobile 510 watt powerhouse some real credit, i9900K 2080 RTX without Max Q bullshit by itself is an amazing accomplishment, it even has a 5,0 and a 5.2GHz preinstalled OC setting. Besides, no one runs both the CPU and GPU at max capacity all the time. I own this exact setup and it does not run at a 100 degrees while gaming, I get 85 degrees, that's where it's actually at with balanced fan speed profile. Stress testing / benchmarking is an unrealistic representation of temperatures and your acting can use some work.
Its so overpriced
laptops are a gamers best freind here where electricity is so expensive
Hey mark why do you have 2 backpacks? Hey Jon one for school and one for my aLiEnWaRe lApTop m51.
Dat laptop’s THICC!!!
"Desktop replacement", but doesn't perform as a desktop, but also doesn't travel as well as a regular laptop. So basically, it sucks is both ways, haha.
i can assure you it performs very well. it's desktop parts.
"At 8.5 lbs..." stopped watching, not for me, rofl. Ok, I didn't, I'm still here just to watch you guys do your thing, haha. This is definitely cool to see this level of upgradibility.
What is better area 51m vs msi gt83vr
Is the m17 r2 processor upgradable easily ?
So is that bad if the CPU runs at 100°? I ask Cuz I have one
What is even an "Ethernet IPV6" port? That doesn't exist! That's the same as saying USB C is faster then USB 2.0 (physical port vs protocol...)
Can you say "overkill?" Lol
i love this dudes voice no homo
lmao a HDD in 2019.
Yes... and it also has 2 SSDs.
Can Riley do alla the vids pleas!?
Does anyone know a briefcase / backpack for this laptop? I would like to fit the chargers too.
