It's super cheap to make someone laugh thanks to youtube and tik tok. it's still really expensive to do action sequences and spectacular spaceship fights.

Nightmare on Elm Street was a horror comedy
as was Friday the 13th and Black Christmas and a ton of other movies, the point is that, YES, comedy is more mode than genre, because most people appreciate a good chuckle at any given point of any film of any genre.

Here's my theory: Comedic films are not valuable enough (entertainment-wise) to spend potentially $10-$20 on a movie ticket for. I am only willing to spend that kind of money on horror films (e.g. Midsommar, It, etc.), action films (e.g. John Wick), and dramatic films (Once Upon A Time in Hollywood, etc.). Comedy usually does not push boundaries. Therefore, I only watch comedic films at home via Netflix, Hulu, Redbox...

If all comedy writers go to TV, howcome we've had no good sitcoms since 2010?

Good video, educational, insightful as well as completely safe and politically correct, can't ignore the fact there is another pretty substantial reason why comedy movies in particular are failing, and if a YouTube channel wouldn't even dare TOUCH the subject, it's actually disturbing.

I would disagree with you slightly. Movies can have a narrative (story) within them that resembles a genre. The western you gave as an example can be told in say Space. Example the Original Battle Star Galactica was an example of a Western. A journey home,Earth. The spaceships are the Conestoga Wagons.

Wow, this philosophical channel sure is going out of its way to avoid discussing the cultural and sociological philosophy changes that have led to comedy's demise. Our PC outrage cancel culture has all but killed comedy, because any comic who dares offend the progressive PC police on Twitter and social media risks paying a far heavier price than they ever did in the past. Since our obsession with PC safe spaces has all but silenced the actual comics, is it any wonder that the quality and popularity of comedy has fallen?

I think it’s also because our society has started to fall in love with horror and action which is more relatable to our generations mood. It could also be that Comedy is more dark humor in dank memes and vines.

This video is mostly bullshit, although it does bring a few good points. The films "Happy Death Day" and "Happy Death Day 2U", which are a mix between a slasher and comedy made in total a bit less than $200 mil. on a shoestring budget of $15 mil. (for the two films!) And the films are appealing to all international audiences for the same reasons -- the films deal with the basic human ideas such as love, prejudice, anger, trauma, the inevitability of death and the fear of the unknown. Those things are the same everywhere, which means that comedy hasn't actually died, people still make money off of comedy, but it has to be done more carefully so as to not be too US-specific or based too much on pop-culture references. Lazily written comedies will not bring you any profit.

THATS WHY!. the fucking cunts on social media and mainstream media have made it to risky to make great comedy. its freaking impossible to make good comedies without being a bit risky in your approach. dont belive me? go watch an standup comedian that dont offend anyone. now go and watch dave chappelle. THATS MY POINT. oh what happen on his last special sticks and bones? motherfuckers tried to cancel him. but you cant cancel dave.

                                                                  • That ironic weeb that likes weeb things

The biggest example of this is Chappelles new special, its clear that the guy though a comedian, is telling his jokes in good spirits, that didn't matter and every news outlet demonized his special (though he power through because he is Chappelle) but what if you are not him? what if it was your money and it wasn't backed by basically the most famous comedian alive? you see the problem.

                                                                    • Brezo11

You can’t make comedy without offending people, and movie studios aren’t willing to do that because all their woke fans will get crazy offended and take to Twitter. They think those people represent the majority because it’s the only voice they hear.

                                                                      • Lumosnight

Comic book based movies perform well outside America because we dumb foreigners can just awe at special FX instead of following the narrative? Seriously? You do realize we get comic books in other countries too and that unlike in America, a lot of people in the rest of the world speak 2 languages, choosing English as a second one. So not only we CAN follow a narrative thread in English, but we also get the source material translated into our languages and can be invested in the story. That was some condescending bullshit.

I agree that it can exist simultaneously as a mode and a genre, but there are filmmakers out there that dont know how to insert comedy into their movies. It: Chapter 2 is a prime example. The misplaced comedic moments made it feel like a disjointed mess. There's nothing wrong with throwing something into a movie to bring out a chuckle or two to break the tension, but some directors throw it around like a toddler who just discovered their own feces.

Once you get used to the trappings of a system or genre, it becomes easier to isolate the individual parts and modularize them to be plugged in wherever and to whatever they may be needed. It's what lead to Deconstructions of genres, and it's what's currently leading us through the deconstruction, subversions, and inversions of individual tropes.
